The 35-year-old says his body will not let him continue his career, having represented the likes of Barcelona, Chelsea and Porto over the last 17 years

The ex-Portugal international began his career with Salgueiros in his native Brazil before winning a move to Porto in 1999, becoming a naturalised citizen of his adopted country in the process.

Following the club's Champions League triumph in 2004, he left the Primeira Liga for Barcelona, spending four years at Camp Nou before moving to Stamford Bridge for two seasons.

He left European football for good in 2010, returning to Brazil with Fluminense, and has decided to call it a day after three years in South America.

"With great sadness and regret I announce the end of my career as a professional athlete," he is quoted as saying by AS.

"The last minutes with Fluminense on Wednesday were my last of my 17 years as a footballer.

"I would have loved to continue until the end of the Brasileiro and help the team get back in the Libertadores but my body wouldn't let me.

"I'm very grateful for all the trust and affection."

The attacking midfielder won 75 caps for Portugal over the course of a seven-year international career, representing them in two European Championships and two World Cups.

If things had been going well for John Obi Mikel we probably wouldn’t be having this conversation.<br />

The rumours linking the Nigerian central midfielder to a whole plethora 
of clubs have been conspicuous in their regularity this summer and even 
as we enter August, his future remains uncertain.<br />

In principle, the 26 year old should be entering into an exciting phase 
of his career. At this age his game should have entered maturity and he 
should be looking towards cementing his place as one of Europe’s finest 
midfielders.<br />
<br />
However, while his contemporaries are dominating contests in the highest
 arenas of the game, Mikel still faces questions about where exactly his
 best position is.<br />
<br />
The return of Jose Mourinho to Chelsea could easily have been considered
 a reason for the Nigerian to be optimistic. It was Mourinho, after all,
 who procured Mikel from under the noses of Manchester United at such 
great expense, and it was Mourinho who saw in Mikel all of the potential
 required to become the natural heir to Claude Makelele.<br />

One might expect that the Portuguese boss would therefore relish the 
prospect of resuming work on his project, on picking up the pieces with 
Mikel and continuing the transformation of a player who was once such a 
tantalising prospect.<br />
<br />
The more cynical might suggest that Mourinho, in fact, is most at fault for the current predicament Mikel finds himself in.<br />

It is easy to forget, but John Obi hasn’t always been the lumbering, 
bumbling defensive midfielder often spotted waddling around the centre 
of the pitch at Stamford Bridge. Once he was a glorious attacking 
talent, striding around the turf with a near-delirious uproar.<br />
<br />
Back in 2005, at the FIFA Youth Championships, Mikel outshone stars such
 as Sergio Aguero and Cesc Fabregas and was, with the exception of the 
imperious Lionel Messi, the outstanding attacking talent of the 
tournament.<br />
<br />
Imagine that the next time you see him huffing and puffing in the 
Premier League, clumsily letting the ball bounce off him, or struggling 
to keep pace with another nimble attacking talent.<br />
<br />
I exaggerate of course, but upon moving to England, the Mikel I describe was lost for good.<br />
<br />
Mourinho, aware of the attacking menace already provided by Frank 
Lampard and Michael Essien; realising the imminent need of replacing 
defensive stalwart Makelele; seduced, possibly, by the pervading 
paradigm of the imposing West African midfielder, sought to redevelop 
the Nigerian into a far less provocative talent.<br />
<br />
It soon became apparent that Makelele was impossible to replace; or if not replace, replicate.<br />
<br />
Mikel lacked the tactical nous and defensive discipline of his 
predecessor and didn’t possess the pace or dynamism of his successors 
across the Premier League, men like Mohamed Diame, Yaya Toure and Victor
 Wanyama, who have once again moved the goalposts and taken the game 
beyond Mikel.<br />
<br />
Fascinatingly, Nigeria’s recent revival and a return to the top of the 
continental tree after 19 years of underachievement, has provided Mikel 
with an ideal environment to demonstrate that once-prodigal ability that
 had appeared to be lost in the ether.<br />
<br />
Stephen Keshi’s remodelling of the Super Eagles, filling the team with 
young, inexperienced and domestic-based talent, made a man out of Mikel.<br />
<br />
The inconsistent, precocious wunderkind suddenly became a player of influence and responsibility.<br />
<br />
Surrounded by youngsters, Mikel became the crucial component, the 
central fulcrum of Keshi’s elect. At both the triumphant Cup of Nations 
and the slightly less convincing Confederations Cup earlier in the 
summer, he was a majestic, imperious force in the heart of the side.<br />
<br />
With tantalising touches and expert teamwork, Mikel consistently and 
relentlessly drove his team forward, brought his teammates into play and
 demonstrated the creativity and vision that won him so many plaudits as
 a teenager.<br />
<br />
His goal against Uruguay, all poise, balance and ferocity, was, for a 
single, solitary second, a window back in time, a glimpse at why Mikel 
was once announced as the successor to Jay-Jay Okocha. Such a vivid, 
explosive talent in his day.<br />
<br />
Writing about Mikel’s terrific performances in Brazil this summer, I concluded the following:<br />

The Nigerian now arrives at a crossroads in his career. Will he finally 
be able to develop into a valuable asset to Chelsea, more than merely a 
familiar part of the furniture, or does he require a move away to 
pastures new, in order to reignite a career that is stalling badly?<br />
<br />
Even in light of interest from clubs such as Monaco, Galatasaray and 
Trabzonspor, it may be that Mikel’s best bet is to remain at Chelsea.<br />
<br />
It is easy to forget how many honours the Nigerian has accumulated in 
West London and it may be that the return of Mourinho, a manager who 
has—at one time at least—valued his contribution, can inject the 
Nigerian with a new vitality.<br />
<br />
If not, we may be destined to forever view Mikel’s career with regret, 
to remember those majestic touches simply as isolated moments and to 
lament the loss of the player he might have been.<br />

 said they were "shocked and disappointed" at the length of the 
suspension.<br />

Uruguay international Suarez had accepted the FA charge
 of violent conduct but claimed his ban should be three games, the 
standard punishment for violent conduct.<br />
<br />

"A three-person independent regulatory commission today upheld the 
FA's claim that a suspension of three matches was clearly insufficient 
and the player will serve a further seven first-team matches in addition
 to the standard three. The suspension begins with immediate effect.<br />
<br />

"The Liverpool forward had accepted a charge of violent
 conduct but had denied the FA's claim that the standard three-match 
sanction was insufficient for the offence.<br />
<br />

"The incident was not seen by the match officials and has therefore been retrospectively reviewed.
<br />

"Suarez has until midday on Friday 26 April to appeal 
[against] the additional suspension, above the standard three matches."<br />
<br />

The ban covers their final four games of this season, and the first six games of 2013-14.<br />
<br />

Reds managing director Ian Ayre said: "Both the club 
and player are shocked and disappointed at the severity of today's 
independent regulatory commission decision.<br />
<br />

"We await the written reasons tomorrow before making any further comment."<br />
<br />

It is not the first time Suarez has been charged with such an offence. He was

Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra in December 2011.<br />

Suarez is on the six-man shortlist for the Professional Footballers' 
Association player of the year award and PFA chief executive Gordon 
Taylor earlier said: "It would be embarrassing if he is named player of 
the year but we have got to deal with it and make sure he is player of 
the year not just in a footballing sense but as a human being as well 
and we will be trying to do that." <br />

According to sources close to the self-anointed Special One, Real Madrid
 Manager Jose Mourinho is once again the chosen one. He is the man Roman
 Abramovich wants to succeed interim manager Rafa Benitez and a deal, 
say those sources, is as good as done.<br />
<br />
This is not something anyone can confirm. Not when Jose Mourinho remains the <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD9">manager of</span>
 Real Madrid, and the Spaniards remain in the hunt for the Champions 
League championship this season. But Jose Mourinho has made no secret of
 his desire to return to England and the pouting Portuguese coach rarely speaks without an agenda. <br />
<br />
‘I cannot deny what is clear in my mind,’ Mourinho said recently. ‘After
 Real Madrid, England, that’s for sure. I keep saying the same, I know 
clearly.’<br />
<br />
He said he could manage ‘everyone’. That he is ‘a professional’ who 
would have to consider offers from other English clubs should they come.<br />
<br />
Manchester City have been linked with a move for Mourinho, while Sir 
Alex Ferguson has made no secret of his admiration for his close friend.<br />
<br />
When Ferguson does eventually retire, Mourinho would certainly be among the leading <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD10">candidates</span> to replace him, but a move to Manchester now looks extremely unlikely.<br />
<br />
The only area in which Roman Abramovich has shown any consistency since taking over at Chelsea is in his ability to surprise.<br />
<br />
Initially, the billionaire owner did want someone else this summer. But 
when Pep Guardiola resisted Abramovich’s advances and opted to take 
charge at Bayern Munich for next season , the Russian oligarch was 
forced to think again.<br />
<br />
Mourinho, he now realises, is his best option. A manager who is as close
 as it gets to someone who can guarantee success. He is a <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD4">serial</span>
 winner, having lifted the league title in all four countries he has 
worked — Portugal, England, Italy and Spain — and led Porto and Inter 
Milan to the Champions League crown.<br />
<br />
Chelsea Boss Roman Abramovich knows Mourinho is capable of rebuilding a 
squad boasting some tremendous talent in players such as Juan Mata, 
Oscar and Eden Hazard, but which still requires an overhaul. <br />
<br />
And <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD6">the Portuguese</span> has dropped the biggest hint yet he’s keen on a return to Stamford Bridge when his time at the Bernabeu comes to an end.<br />
<br />
“I have an adventurous spirit and do not know what will happen next 
season,” Mourinho said. “It’s not easy to choose a new destination after
 <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD5">working</span> in England, Portugal, Italy and Spain.<br />
<br />
“Maybe I could return to somewhere I’ve already been. Watch out for surprises.”<br />
<br />
Chelsea interim boss Rafael Benitez has confirmed he will not be staying beyond the end of this season, with Mourinho and a <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD2">number</span> of other high-profile managers continuously linked with the role.<br />
<br />
The 50-year-old could yet remain in Madrid, particularly if he guides 
the Spanish giants to an unprecedented 10th European Cup crown.<br />
<br />
The old guard, players who served Mourinho with such distinction when they won back-to-back <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD3">Premier League</span>
 titles, needs replacing, even if there would probably be a renewed 
desire to see Frank Lampard extend his stay at the club. But what of the
 problems of the past? What of the clash of egos — namely between 
Abramovich and Mourinho — that led to their split in 2007? <br />
<br />
According to those same sources, Abramovich and Mourinho have settled 
their differences. Chelsea’s owner speaks fondly of his former manager 
in the company of friends and associates and stories of gifts that the 
Russian has sent to Mourinho are presented as further evidence. <br />
<br />
Cristiano Ronaldo and Co are among the favourites for the title after knocking out <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD12">Manchester United</span> to reach the quarter-finals, where they’ll face Galatasaray.<br />
<br />
Mourinho was spotted house-hunting in <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD1">London</span> last week and he has already stated his his intention to return to the Premier League.
