Rapper Kanye West is being sued for illegal use of sample lyrics contained in his 2005 #1 hit, “Gold Digger.” What’s up with that? Take the jump to find out!
According to MTV, West is being sued by Trena Steward and Lorenzo Pryor, daughter and son of the late David Pryor, who was a member of the group Thunder & Lightning.
Steward and Pryor
say their dad’s group released a song entitled, “Bumpin’ Bus Stop” in
1974 and in that song, their dad says ‘get down’ three times over a
13-second time frame.
So
what’s this got to do with West? According to Pryor’s children, West
lifted the 13-second bit of their dad’s song to come up with the lyrics
‘get down girl, go ‘head, get down’ contained in his 2005 #1 hit, “Gold
Digger.”
Steward
and Pryor each own one-quarter of the song, “Bumpin’ Bus Stop” and are
suing West for illegal copyright infringement. In the lawsuit, they ask
the judge to stop the sale of West’s “Gold Digger” and to award them
millions of dollars in damages.
And West isn’t the only one Steward and Pryor are going after in their lawsuit.
They
are suing various record labels as well claiming that there has been a
15-year massive scale copyright infringement where those named in the
case have “systematically and willfully refused to clear samples of the
Plaintiff’s original, copyrighted work in order to gain a commercial
profit and to avoid paying and crediting the author.”
