Critics have already dismissed the phone as “another triumph of mediocrity” with some saying that “the long rumored Facebook phone turned out not to be a phone at all”
Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook has however ignored them and said that the new "Facebook phone" would offer consumers an entirely "new experience" called Home.
At a highly-anticipated event at the company's headquarters, Zuckerberg said: "Today we are finally going to talk about that Facebook phone, or more accurately, we are going to talk about how you can turn your Android phone into a great social phone."
He added: "We are not building a phone and we are not building an operating system but we are are building something that is a whole lot deeper than an ordinary app."
The launch of an "enhanced app" reinforces Facebook's "mobile first" attitude - with users increadingly checking their status updates on smartphones and tablets.
According to the site, more than 680 million of its one billion users now check Facebook from mobile devices.
Within minutes of the announcement - which arguably marks Facebook's biggest jump into the mobile market - the subject began trending on Twitter.
The social media giant had refused to divulge details ahead of the launch, leading to speculation it could be builfing Facebook phones in partnership with HTC.
Leaked images of what was claimed to be a Facebook phone also appeared on websites, feeding those theories.
But Mark McClusky, Wired.com editor said that ” The genius of the Facebook phone is that the company made a phone without making a phone at all. It’s not overly ambitious. It’s not a big bet. And that’s why it may have such a huge payoff”
