Judging by the car park at the American University of Dubai students here are not going to struggle with making ends meet.<br />

A Rolls-Royce, a Ferrari and a black Aston Martin, which wouldn't look out of place in a Bond film, line the student car park row after row.<br />

The gallery of supercars was taken by student Meeka Nasser who wanted to show the world the array of models on show at the university.<br />

Students Do Not Want The Strike To End - ASUU President

Currently on industrial action, the President of the Academic Staff 
Union of Universities has said the strike process is still ongoing 
because the students are not ready for it to end.<br />
<br />
In an interview with the Punch,
 the President of the union, Dr. Isa Fagge, said  students were tired of
 the incessant industrial actions by the university lecturers due to the
 Federal Government’s failure to implement the agreement it had with 
ASUU since 2009.<br />
Fagge said the union had decided to heed the 
advice of the students to continue the strike until the Federal 
Government fully implemented the agreement.<br />
<br />
“Our students have 
come out to say they don’t want us to call off the strike until the 
Federal Government answers us, because they don’t want us to call off 
now and later we go back to strike again. So, we are heeding the advice 
of our students,” he said.<br />
On the complaint by the Federal 
Government that it lacked the funds to implement the agreement, Fagge 
said it was not all about money, noting that government did not need 
funds to start implementing some parts of the agreement.<br />
“There are issues and agreement they can implement without money. Why don’t they begin with those ones?” he asked.<br />
He
 added that it was unfortunate that the government had pulled out of 
dialogue with ASUU, stating that the union would not be intimidated. He
 said, “Now, government has pulled out of the dialogue. We thought we 
were the ones going on strike, but now government has also gone on 
strike.”<br />
<br />
Last Thursday, university students under the auspices of 
the National Association of Nigerian Students reportedly staged a 
peaceful protest in Ado-Ekiti and flayed the Federal Government for 
failing to honour the agreement it had with ASUU since 2009.<br />
The 
students, who were from public universities, threatened to disrupt 
activities of private universities, adding that the government was not 
bothered about their plight because children of government officials 
were studying either in private universities or studying overseas.<br />
<br />
The
 university lecturers began an indefinite strike on July 1 and have been
 demanding full implementation of the agreement ASUU had with the 
Federal Government in 2009, which among other things include the 
UNESCO-recommended 26 per cent budgetary allocation for education. 
However, the government said it could not implement the agreement, and 
is seeking re-negotiation.<br />
The Federal Government, last Wednesday,
 accused ASUU of being unrealistic by continuing its nationwide strike 
and asked it to rethink its demands, considering other commitments 
government has.<br />
<br />
The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who 
gave government’s position on the strike when he briefed journalists at 
the end of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council, said 
apart from security, education was one of the sectors the government had
 expended a lot of money on.

A seven-man robbery gang led by a woman, Chioma Ezekwesiri a Law 
graduate from the University of Lagos, has been arrested along with six 
other members of her gang by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, in 
Lagos while attempting to rob Bolatito Hotel, Kola Bus Stop, Ijaiye, 
Lagos.<br />
<br />
The alleged mastermind and ringleader, Chioma confessed she arranged 
for the guns with Raymond Chukwuka, a.k.a. Stubborn. They were to use 
for the operation, which she claimed was a land matter, whereas the 
police said that their mission was allegedly to rob a male customer of 
the hotel, who sells fertilizer, of about N8 million.<br />
<br />
According to P.M News reports, other suspected members of the gang 
are: Amadi Igwe, 41, Raymond Chukwuka, 24, Ignatius Okeredi, 27, Michael
 Madu, 52, and Okechukwu Jerome, 28, and a yet-to-be identified member 
who is now on the run.<br />
<br />
The alleged robbery operation, according to the police, was foiled by
 some staff of the hotel, who promptly made a distress call to SARS 
operatives.<br />
The law enforcement agents were said to have surrounded the hotel, 
and later searched all its occupants. It was in the process that two 
locally made guns and 12 live ammunition were recovered from the robbery
 suspects.

Consequently many of the students were alleged to have received various degree of injuries.
A three hundred student was allegedly seriously injured is presently receiving treatment in an hospital.

Urhobotoday gathered that three of the students who were critically injured as a result of the police action are admitted in different hospitals at Asaba, Delta State.

<br />“We embarked on the rally on the 22nd of August 2013 after writing to Delta State Commissioner of Police Mr Ikechukwu Aduba and Director of State Security (SSS) intimating them of our intention to go on peaceful protest..To our dismay, the Nigeria police did everything possible to obstruct our effort by first of all arresting the Student Union President of Delta State University Abraka, Agboroli Joshua and other students on their way to Asaba along the expressway before the Asaba International Airport.

“After much trouble and intervention the arrested students were released. Despite the police effort to obstruct our peaceful rally, we finally succeeded in conveying at summit junction where we intended moving on to the SSG’s office along Okpanam road by Zenith Bank where we wanted register our grievances to the government. It was at that point police said we should not move further.

“One Mr Ifeanyi Emmanuel of the Nigeria police Asaba then ordered the police to shoot at harmless students who were going about their protest peaceful. He said the order to shoot at the students was an instruction from an ‘Oga at the Top’ whom he later identified as Delta State Commissioner of Police.

“In the course of the police shooting sporadically and firing canisters of tear gas, many students and even journalists sustained various degree of injuries with three students critically injured. They are presently receiving treatment at St. Joseph Hospital Asaba,” the student reported.

The students who alleged that the State Government did not show any interest about the plight, however appealed to the Inspector General of Police Mr Mohammed Abubakar to investigate the issues for them to get Justice.

Attempt for Urhobotoday to get police side of the story was however futile as Delta State Commissioner of Police Mr Ikechukwu Aduba and the State Police Public Relation Officer refused to pick our calls before going to press.

THE Federal Government will engage the leadership of Academic Staff 
Union of Universities (ASUU) in a crucial talks today, in a move to end 
the ongoing strike by the union.<br />Minister of  Education, Professor  
Ruqa’yyatu  Ahmed Rufa’i, made this known in Abuja, on Monday, saying 
reasonable progress had been made in the ongoing efforts to get the 
lecturers back to classroom.<br />She noted that a presidential 
intervention of N100 billion had been released to the implementation 
committee of the Needs Assessment Report, which has the Benue State 
governor, Gabriel Suswam, as chairman.<br />Professor Rufa’i, who spoke 
while declaring open the mid-term review of the four-year strategy plan 
for the development of the education sector, said this was to address 
some of the identifiable challenges in the nation’s university system.<br />She
 said it was as a result of the resolve to address all challenges facing
 the sector that assessments of each area of the education sector were 
carried out.<br />“We have done this for the federal unity schools and it 
is helping in their transformation. The recent one carried out for all 
public universities has led to a presidential intervention to ensure 
that challenges identified are given due attention.<br />“As a result, 
N100 billion has been committed to this and the president has 
inaugurated an implementation committee chaired by Governor Suswam,” she
 said.<br />The minister said the implementation of the four-year 
strategic plan (2011-2015) was on course, stressing that credible 
progress had been made in the six focal areas as outlined in the plan.<br />She
 reaffirmed the commitment to move the sector ahead, saying “we shall 
continue to dig deep and identify further challenges and address them.”<br />Professor
 Rufa’i, therefore, appealed to all stakeholders to continue to show 
understanding, support and partnership, noting that “our actions today 
will define where we are tomorrow.”<br />She added that government would 
continue to dialogue with ASUU in order to end the ongoing strike that 
had crippled academic activities in government’s universities in 
Nigeria.<br />

Police in Delta State have arrested a 39-year-old personal secretary to a
professor at the Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, for sending a malicious
text message to her boss to pay her N100,000 as ‘settlement’ for having amorous
relationship with her or be ready to face public scandal.<br />
<br />

Parading the lady (names withheld), yesterday, in Asaba, the state Police
Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Lucky Uyabeme, said she was picked up
following a report lodged “by a Professor of Faculty of Fine Arts, DELSU,
Abraka who reported that he received a threat text message from an unknown
person demanding N100, 000 to avoid defamatory publication on him.<br />
<br />

“However, through intelligence policing, special anti-kidnapping squad operatives
based at Obiaruku tracked and arrested the personal secretary to the
professor.”<br />
<br />

The suspect, while fielding questions from newsmen amid tears said, “I did
not do anything. My crime is that I am sleeping with a married man. The Prof is
my boyfriend. I asked him for N100,000 or I would make it known to the public
that we were dating. I wanted to end the relationship and use the money as a
pay-off.<br />
<br />

“We have been dating for two years now. I run a boutique and a business
centre in Abraka. I am also the private secretary to the professor.<br />
<br />

“He has not been paying. I did not want to blackmail him. I did not mean any
harm when I sent the text message. I never expected it was going to be like
this. I felt because we were dating he would give me the money.”<br />
<br />

Authorities of the school are yet to release a statement on the matter.<br />

arrested by operatives of Special Fraud Unit, Ikoyi, for allegedly swindling
foreign women to the tune of $48,000 through a dating website.</span></strong></div>

Surprisingly, the 22-year-old Microbiology undergraduate 
confessed that his victims, resident in the United States of America, 
were ‘swept off their feet’ by his profile on the dating site.<br />
<br />
The suspects are Chibuzor Akobundu (Devon Miles, Martin Williams and Sani Bala Ismaila1st left), and other alleged accomplices.<br />
<br />
He
 spoke with journalists yesterday, while being paraded alongside two 
staff of a second generation bank, who allegedly facilitated the 
withdrawal of money via Western Union Money Transfer.<br />
<br />
The suspect 
adopted Devon Miles as his name and pasted a photograph of an unknown 
American citizen as his profile on the dating site.<br />
<br />
<strong>Victims</strong><br />
He confessed to have swindled five American single women within the ages of 40 and 50, in search for husbands.<br />
<br />
He
 gave the name of his first victim as Antoinette. He promised to marry 
her and was able to dupe her of $16,000 before she suspected he was a 
fraudster.<br />
<br />
His next victim was one Jettie Simpson, who reportedly sent $5,000 to him via Western Union.<br />
<br />
Others
 also duped by Akobundu were Shelly Bashir, $100; Billie Klock, $13,000,
 in a relationship that reportedly lasted for five months, and Andrea 
Desena, $8,000.<br />
<br />
<strong>‘How I operate’</strong><br />
Akobundu said: “I started browsing the dating site three years ago, posing as a US citizen residing in Nigeria.<br />
“At that time, it was a common game around my area in Ikeja. Along the line I met these ladies who were looking for husbands.<br />
<br />
“They
 fell in love with me because of my profile, where I stated that I was a
 49-year-old divorcee in search of a wife. I claimed to be an engineer.<br />
<br />
“I
 would tell them I was stranded in Nigeria and needed some money to 
travel back to US and they would send the money via Western Union.<br />
<br />
“At
 other times, I would tell them that my daughter was sick and that I 
needed money to offset her hospital bill and they would fall for the 
trick. I have never used charm to hypnotise any of them.<br />

 parents were never aware of what I was into because anytime I got a 
reasonable amount, I would travel to South Africa and squander the 
money.<br />
<br />
“My regret is that I never used the money for anything 
tangible, to avoid suspicion. My mum is a teacher, while my father is a 
businessman and have been responsible for the payment of my school 
fees.”<br />
<br />
<strong>Victim’s story</strong><br />
Explaining how he was
 arrested, spokesperson for the Unit, Ngozi Insitume-Agu, said: “The 
arrest followed a petition via the Unit’s website from one Amelia 
Brosick, a US citizen, dated April 16, 2013, where she alleged that one 
Devon Miles, suspected to be a Nigerian, defrauded her to the tune of 
$16,439 using different tactics.<br />
<br />
“She added that she met the 
suspect on a dating site in June 2012, and the suspect, under the guise 
of dating her for the purpose of marriage, obtained the alleged sum 
fraudulently through Western Union.<br />
<br />
“Armed with the petition, 
Western Union was contacted and they sent a detailed spread sheet 
showing all the transfers in the name of the suspect.<br />
<br />
“Following 
the information, the duo of Nnamdi Nwakwue Dike and Olawale Oguniran 
attached to Western Union in Skye Bank, Owerri and Allen Avenue, Ikeja, 
branches, respectively, were arrested.<br />
<br />
“Their revealing statements
 led to the arrest of the serial internet fraudster, Chibuzor Akobundun 
also known as Devon Miles, Martin Williams and Sani Bala Ismaila. He 
adopted Devon as the internet name, but opened the account in the name 
of Martin Williams.<br />
<br />
<strong>Accomplices confess</strong><br />
“He
 confessed that he provided the bank staff with the photocopy of his 
identity card so that they could withdraw the monies, while he gave them
 some percentage.<br />
<br />
“The bank staff also confessed that they used 
Uche’s particulars to withdraw money from other persons’ accounts 
without his knowledge.”<br />
<br />
However, Dike of the Owerri branch denied 
knowledge of what Akobundun was into. He maintained that he was only 
doing his job as a front-line teller staff of the bank, adding that he 
had never at any time paid Akobundu above the stipulated amount.<br />
<br />
He said: “Anytime he came to collect the money, he would answer the question given  correctly, including the secret code.<br />
<br />
“Mine
 is to ascertain whether the details corresponded with what was in the 
system at the end of which I would hand his money over to him.”<br />
<br />
Asked
 if he received any gratification from Akobundu, he said he was given 
tips of N1,000 or N2,000 at times, just like some other bank customers 
do.</div>

A female student of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile Ife was 
yesterday reportedly apprehended by authorities of the institution after
 she allegedly attempted to flush her new born baby down a toilet.<br />
<br />
The shocking incident was said to have happened at the popular Moremi Hall of residence on the campus.<br />
It
 was learnt that the student, in her late 20s is of the Department of 
Agricultural extension in the university was allegedly caught by one of 
the cleaners, who raised alarm when she noticed blood streaming from the
 gutter of the toilet, which linked the drainage. Other sources said the
 student is a 400 level student of the Electrical&Electronics 
Engineering department.<br />

The student and the rescued baby are under close watch at the 
institution’s health centre, where they are currently receiving 
treatment.<br />

The Dean of Students’ Affairs in the university, Dr. 
Lateefat Durosinmi, and the security department were said to have taken 
over the matter, with investigation said to have started as some people 
who commented on the matter opined the student might have thought she 
needed to defecate when she was about having the baby-just like most 
inexperienced women.<br />

Confirming the incident, Public Relations 
Officer of the university, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, cautioned that people
 should not jump into conclusion by believing that the student 
intentionally wanted to flush the new born baby, adding that the 
security department was already investigating the circumstances 
surrounding the incident.<br />
“The cleaner, who was said to have 
discovered the blood and subsequently caught the student was being 
interrogated by the security department,” Olanrewaju said.<br />

The riots 
in the University of Uyo that claimed the lives of three students 
yesterday has added to its toll as the Senate President, National 
Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Donald Onukaogu, and 
four others died in a car crash on their way to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to
 intervene on the current uprising. It is learnt that they died along 
Uyo-Ikot Ekpene road. They travelled last night in order to get to the

that claimed the lives of three students yesterday has added to its toll as the
Senate President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade
Donald Onukaogu, and four others died in a car crash on their way to Uyo, Akwa
Ibom State, to intervene on the current uprising. It is learnt that they died
along Uyo-Ikot Ekpene road. They travelled last night in order to get to the
Akwa Ibom State capital for their intervention this morning, but unfortunately,
met their untimely death.</span></div>

The riots

Protest by students of the University of Benin over alleged shooting 
to death of  late Momodu Ibrahim, a 22-year-old 500 level student of the
 Faculty of Laboratory Science yesterday disrupted vehicular movement in
 Benin city yesterday, as the students dressed in black attire marched 
through some major streets, calling for the arrest and prosecution of 
the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ogida Police Station, Mrs. 
Carol Afegbai, over her alleged complicity in the murder of Momodu.<br />
<br />

Late Momodu, said to be the only male child of his parents was 
allegedly shot close to his family house at 1, Igbobaewaye Street, off 
Siluko road by Textile Mill junction.<br />
<br />

An elder sister of the deceased, Ebohon Rebecca Egbe, who spoke to 
newsmen gave an account of how the life of his brother was cut short by 
the bullet allegedly fired by the DPO, while she called for justice to 
be done in the case.<br />
<br />

“I was in my office in Port Harcourt when I received a call from a 
cousin of mine in Benin who is a policeman, saying that he wants to tell
 me that we lost Ibrahim my younger brother.<br />

“I called my mother and she said they had been looking for him in for
 two days. Normally it is after 48 hours that you report such thing to 
the Police.”<br />
<br />

According to her, she later went to the Police only to be told that 
he was allegedly killed by Carol Afegbua, the DPO of Ogida Police 
Station and was buried the next day without the knowledge of the family.<br />
<br />

According to her, his brother’s cell-phone which was with the Police 
rang all through as “we were trying to locate his whereabouts until the 
Police finally picked the call and asked my mother to come to the police
 station.<br />
<br />

“When the DPO was confronted over why her men shot my brother, she 
explained that they did not know his identity because her men asked him 
to stop and he refused. The DPO alleged that he was carrying a gun and 
wanted to shoot her men on patrol before they shot at him in self 
defence.”<br />
<br />

The family, according to the sister of the slain student, was 
informed that the body of late Momodu had been buried at a public 
cemetery in Egor Local Government Area of the state.
