Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Ameachi has experienced another sordid
treatment of “an order from above” as he was disallowed from entering into the
Government house, Port Harcourt via the Fortes Road entrance
on Thursday by a detachment of the Nigerian Police Force.<br />
<br />
The Governor, alongside his convoy and a company of former Speakers of
Houses Assembly in the country, who came to visit him, were blocked off the
private entrance of the Government House.<br />
<br />
This was regardless of his four truckloads of policemen led by several
senior officers of the Force.<br />
Accord to reports, a heated argument ensued between the Governor’s aides and
the policemen who they claimed they were acting on orders from above.<br />
<br />
“The police officer who led the team was said to have told Amaechi that he
does not take orders from the civilian, even when he was aware that it was the
Governor.”<br />
According to one the aides, Amaechi’s overture to pacify the police officers
failed as they insisted that they can only act with superior order from Abuja.<br />
<br />
 The State Commissioner for Information, Ibim Semenitari, said it was
tantamount to  big embarrassment as “the governor had to go through a much
longer route”.<br />
<br />
She also decried the level of impunity the crisis was creating adding that
the action of the policemen  is a disrespect to Amaechi and  his
office as well as “an affront on democracy and federalism.”<br />
<br />
“It was a big embarrassment. One shudders to think and it’s an affront on
federalism.<br />
“We are waiting for the next move. May be the Governor would now be placed
under house arrest” she stated.<br />
<br />
“It’s clearly unacceptable in any decent society”, she said.<br />
Besides, the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, George Feyii, said in
a statement in Abuja<br />
He recalled the stealthy deployment of “strange policemen and intelligence
officers” to the Governor’s lodges in Abuja and Port Harcourt without prior
notice to the Governor as was the practice nationwide.<br />
<br />
Feyii’s statement read in part: “The Rivers State Government notes with
distress what is now an apparent attack on the person of Governor Chibuike
Rotimi Amaechi.<br />
<br />
“On Tuesday (July 16), two policemen, one of them, Inspector Bawa,
reported to the Rivers State Governor’s Lodge at Justice Mohammed Bello Street,
Asokoro, FCT, Abuja.<br />
“They claimed to have been posted by Nigeria Police Force Headquarters to
monitor the Rivers State Governor’s Lodge.<br />
<br />
“Earlier, four intelligence officers had been posted to Government House, Port
Harcourt by the Rivers State Police Command. These postings were done without
any notification or reference to Governor Amaechi.<br />
“We are aware that on issues of personal safety, an official reserves the
right to pick the security personnel to whom he may entrust his safety. This is
more so in the case of a state Governor.<br />
<br />
“The policemen insisted on Wednesday morning (July 17) that they
had directives to remain at the gate of the Rivers State Governor’s Lodge.<br />
“Not only is the Rivers State Government uncertain of the true identity of
these gentlemen, we are worried as to the true intent behind these latest
postings.<br />
<br />
“In recent times, events in Rivers State and especially around Governor
Amaechi have been suggestive of deliberate nonchalance at best, and complicity
at worst in the security breaches that have occurred.<br />
“This trend has continued despite a passionate appeal to the highest levels
of authority.<br />
<br />
“We are worried that we can no longer guarantee the safety of Governor
Chibuike Amaechi and wish to reiterate our call on all relevant authorities to
ensure the safety of Governor Amaechi and the peace and security of everyone in
Rivers State”, the Feyii pleaded.<br />
<br />
It was gathered that the Governor and his entourage were delayed for about
45 minutes after which they had to take the option of a longer route through
the Azikiwe Road entrance to the Government House.<br />
This is one among the humiliations the governor has been made to face since
the beginning of his row with the presidency.<br />

The crisis in the Rivers Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened 
yesterday, ahead of Saturday’s mini convention of the ruling party.<br />
<br />

The party’s state executive expelled 18 associates of Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who has been suspended by the party.<br />
<br />

Amaechi and President Goodluck Jonathan have been at loggerheads, 
with Minister of State for Education Nyesom Wike leading the 
anti-Amaechi group in the Rivers PDP.<br />
<br />

Among those expelled is the immediate past Deputy National Chairman, Chief Sam Sam Jaja.<br />
<br />

They were expelled for “failure” to appear before the Osinakachukwu 
Ideozu-led Committee on Performance Assessment of Political Office 
Holders, elected and appointed, on the ticket of the PDP in Rivers 
State, which was set up by party Chairman Felix Obuah.<br />
<br />

Also expelled are: Secretary to the State Government (SSG) George 
Feyii; Chief of Staff, Government House, Chief Tony Okocha and the 
Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority 
(GPHCDA), Mrs. Aleruchi Cookey-Gam.<br />
<br />

The expelled commissioners are Victor Giadom (Works), Augustine 
Wokocha (Power), Worgu Boms (Attorney-General and Commissioner for 
Justice), Joe Poroma (Social Welfare and Rehabilitation), Ezemonye 
Ezekiel Amadi (Lands and Survey), Fred Igwe (Sports), Emmanuel Chinda 
(Agriculture), Joeba West (Women Affairs), Patricia Simon Hart (Water 
Resources and Rural Development), Okey Amadi (Energy), Charles Okaye 
(Chieftaincy Affairs), Dr. Nnabuihe Imegwu (Culture and Tourism), Ibim 
Semenitari (Information and Communications) and Samuel Eyiba (Local 
Government).<br />
<br />

The Rivers PDP also alleged a plot by the governor to scuttle the 
party’s August 31 special national convention in Abuja through a court 
injunction.<br />
<br />

Okocha, however, said the Obuah-led PDP had no power to expel him and
 other associates of Amaechi. He described as untrue, the allegation 
that the governor was planning to scuttle the party’s national 
convention.<br />
<br />

Sources said the decision was to prevent the expelled persons from attending Saturday’s special national convention.<br />
<br />

But Obuah told reporters in Port Harcourt that the 18 Amaechi 
associates were expelled for failing to submit themselves before the 
party’s performance evaluation committee.<br />
<br />

The Rivers PDP chairman noted that the party, acting on the 
recommendations of its disciplinary and the performance evaluation 
committee, decided to punish the 18 to serve as a deterrent to others.<br />
<br />

Obuah said: “The refusal of the 18 affected persons to send in 
written reports of their stewardship, if they were not chanced to put up
 appearance, despite the well-publicised sitting arrangements of the 
committee is considered as an affront, insubordination and lack of 
respect for constituted authority.<br />
<br />

“The committee duly notified all concerned and was willing to accept 
any written report from such persons where necessary but did not receive
 any supervening circumstance that made it impossible for any of them to
 honour the invitation.<br />
<br />

“We had no choice but to show them the way out of the party, because 
we cannot continue to operate in this disorderly manner, being a serious
 and disciplined political party.”<br />
<br />

The chairman also said the PDP members who did not appear before the 
committee escaped the sanction because they reached both the party’s 
leadership and the committee, but most importantly, sent in 
documentation of their performances, which he said the committee 
accepted as satisfactory.<br />
<br />

The Chief of Staff, however, said: “The PDP does not have such powers
 to expel me or any member of the state executive council. The matter 
involving Felix Obuah’s executive is in court. So, it is subjudice.<br />
<br />

“We challenge them to publish the names of the eight commissioners 
who they said wrote to them, why they could not attend the invitation of
 the so-called performance evaluation committee and which yardstick.<br />
<br />

“What they are planning is to use fake delegates to the 
sub-convention of the PDP that is coming up this weekend. The thing to 
ask is, why is PDP fighting PDP? A house divided against itself cannot 
stand. The whole thing looks like people who are ignorant.<br />
<br />

“The matter is in court and we are not perturbed. Who are those they 
said they wrote letters inviting them to appear before a committee? Let 
them also show us the letters they claimed to have sent out.<br />
<br />

“We all know that the PDP in the state has two factions: the original one led by Chief Godspower Ake and Felix Obuah’s.”<br />
<br />

Okocha also stated that those alleging that Amaechi and some 
prominent Nigerians were floating a new political party must be 
soothsayers.<br />
<br />

The chief of staff stressed Amaechi had said he is still a member of 
the PDP, but declared that if he is suffocated in PDP, he would leave.<br />
<br />

On the claim by Rivers PDP that Amaechi and the Rivers Chief Judge, 
Justice Peter Agumagu, were plotting to get a court injunction to 
prevent the state’s delegates from attending the convention and to stop 
the convention in Abuja from holding, Okocha noted that anybody who knew
 Amaechi would confirm that he would never engage in “a fight of fools”.<br />
<br />

Okocha went on: “There is no plan by Governor Amaechi to seek a court
 injunction to stop the PDP’s convention. Why it is that the party is 
trying to reduce the number of the state’s delegates, when others are 
thinking of increasing.<br />
<br />

“We expect the party to act wisely by respecting the matter in the Appeal Court.”<br />
<br />

The Obuah-led PDP also stated that it had uncovered a “subterranean 
move” by Amaechi and the newly-appointed Acting Chief Judge of Rivers 
state, Justice Peter Agumagu, to prevent the state’s delegates from 
participating in the convention.

State Police Command has arrested 50-year-old Oby George for feeding desperate
barren with seeds which made them to look pregnant and later steal babies to
hand over to them after a ‘cooked up labour’ and ‘delivery.’</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"></span></div>

It was gathered that once these desperate, aging, barren women go to George,
believing she had herbs which could defy medicine and make them pregnant and
have normal babies, she would give them some mysterious seeds and herbs to be
taking orally.<br />
<br />
The seed will make their stomachs and legs to begin to swell, which many of
them believed are really signs of pregnancy.<br />
<br />
George would warn them never to go for scan or visit any hospital for check up
or ante-natal. She was also the person who would tell them when they were due
for delivery.<br />
<br />
On delivery day, she would give them another seed, which would make them to
start vomiting and going to the toilet, after wards she would ask them to lie
on table and to start pushing because the baby was already coming.<br />
<br />
Just to make them believe that their babies were coming; George would push a
fist into their private and would keep shouting at them to push. It was
gathered that some of the women used to lose consciousness during the supposed
‘labour,’ apparently due to the seed they had ingested earlier and weakness
from incessant vomiting and stooling.<br />
<br />
To drive home the point that they had actually delivered, she would slice their
private parts with blade, so that they would see blood when they recovered
their wits. The women would later be compelled to use pad after the ‘labour’
and ‘delivery.’<br />
<br />
Many of these women are believed to have gone to their various churches to
testify how God visited and blessed with the fruit of the wombs like God did
for Hannah in the Bible.<br />
<br />
Most of the babies which are given to these women are believed to have been
stolen or bought from ‘baby factories’ in eastern part of the country.<br />
<br />
Victims are charged according to the sex or number of babies they wanted. Twins
go for N1.5million and triplets for N2.7million</span></div>

Though George lives in Port Harcourt and was arrested in Port Harcourt, but
most of her victims seem to be from Lagos State.<br />

George was arrested after one of her victims, Desope Cecelia, 61, who honestly
believed she had delivered a set of twin boys, went to a health centre at
Festac area for a medical checkup.<br />
<br />
The doctor on duty had taken one look at the 61-year-old woman and concluded
she could not have bore the twin.<br />
<br />
He had immediately alerted area E policemen, Festac. A team of Policemen, led
by the area commander, ACP. Dan Okoro had invited Cecilia to the station for
questioning. And for hours, Cecilia insisted that she had actually delivered
the kids herself.<br />
<br />
It took the frank confession of George to convince Cecilia that she had been
hood winked by fraudsters.<br />
<br />
Narrating how she was duped, Cecilia, who was said to have broken down in tears
after George’s confession, said: “It was one lady who told me about Oby’s
ability to help women like me get pregnant. She gave me Oby’s phone number; I
called her and explained that I was looking for the fruit of the womb. Though I
live in Lagos, but I spoke with Oby through phone. She asked to come over to
Port Harcourt.<br />
<br />
“She said she would give me a seed and herbs to help me conceive. She charged
me N1.5 million. I asked for twins, boys. She said I must not go for scan or
hospital. She told me that my babies are miracle ones, thus hospital can’t
carry out their delivery. When it was nine months, she said I should come again
to Port Harcourt to deliver.<br />
<br />
“At Port Harcourt, she gave me another seed to eat. I started going to toilet.
Later she asked me to lie down on the delivery table. She said I should begin
to push. I pushed with all my power. Later I heard the cries of a baby. She
asked me to push again; I pushed again and heard cries of another baby. I went
to hospital with my babies in Lagos and I don’t even know why police arrested
me.”<br />
<br />
When police raided the delivery home at Port Harcourt, two other victims were
seen.<br />
<br />
One of them, Joy Ibe, 43, said she had been searching for a baby for over 18
years now. When she met Oby, she thought her troubles were over.<br />
<br />
When Ibe presented herself, she looked pregnant, what with her swollen stomach
and legs.<br />
<br />
Explaining that she lives in Ajah area of Lagos, Ibe said that one of her
neighbours, living overseas gave her Oby’s phone number.<br />
<br />
“When I called Oby, she asked me to come down to Port Harcourt. She gave me two
herbs and seed. On the day that police arrested me there, she actually asked me
to come so that she would check if I was due. I paid N2.7 million for triplets
and the treatment.  My stomach became swollen and my legs. Even my clothes
could no longer fit me. I believed I was pregnant. I was given the impression
that I must not go for scan.”<br />
Building her own defence, Oby denied knowing where the babies were brought
from.<br />
<br />
She claimed that it was one Helen Okoro, who used to bring the babies. She
further said that her role in the scam was only to provide her home as the
delivery place for the ‘babies.’<br />
She further said that one Mr. and Mrs. Tella were also involved. They were
actually the people who first sent Cecilia to her.<br />
<br />
“The Tellas were the ones treating her before they brought her to my home. They
said they wanted her to deliver in my house. They later told me that Helene
Okoro would come over to my house for the delivery of Cecilia’s babies. When I
saw Okoro, she told me that she could not use her home for the delivery because
her husband is a pastor.<br />
<br />
It is Okoro who usually arranged and brought the babies. On the delivery day,
Okoro gave Cecilia something to drink. I was there. It was also Okoro who used
blade to cut her private part so that blood would come to show that she had
delivered.”<br />
<br />
Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, said police were still working to arrest
other fleeing members of the dastardly syndicate. She added: “This is the
latest trend in town now. All barren women or women seeking for fruits of the
wombs should hold onto God. People like Oby are still out there.”</span></div>
