Nigerian Army Jets Bomb Boko-Haram Camps After Massacre In Yobe State Colledge

Fighter jets have bombed camps belonging to suspected Islamist militants
 in northeast Nigeria in response to a massacre of students at an 
agricultural college, an army spokesman said on Thursday.<br />
<br />
The 
Islamist sect Boko Haram is suspected of carrying out the night-time 
raid on a college in Yobe state on Sunday, in which students were 
dragged out of their beds and shot. Forty-one were killed.<br />
<br />
Boko 
Haram, which has not claimed responsibility for the attack, is fighting 
to impose an Islamic state in religiously-mixed Nigeria. It has become 
the biggest security threat to a country that is Africa's second largest
 economy and top oil exporter.<br />
<br />
"We used jet fighters to drop 
bombs on terrorist camps, where many of the insurgents were killed," 
said Captain Eli Lazarus, military spokesman in Yobe state.<br />
<br />
He 
said the strikes were carried out on Monday near Majari village on the 
border between Yobe and Borno, the two states worst hit by Boko Haram's 
four-year-old insurgency.<br />
<br />
Soldiers have arrested 15 people 
suspected of involvement in the college attack and patrols along main 
roads in Borno and Yobe have been reinforced, Lazarus said.<br />
<br />
Nigeria's
 army has in the past exaggerated its capabilities and successes and 
played down casualties among soldiers and civilians, security and 
diplomatic sources say.<br />
<br />
Authorities have ordered greater security
 around schools since Sunday's attacks to help restore confidence in the
 Western-style education system that Boko Haram wants banished, 
government sources told Reuters this week.<br />
<br />
Thousands have been 
killed since Boko Haram launched its uprising in 2009. As it has grown 
bolder and more deadly, it has also forged links with Islamists in the 
Sahara, including al Qaeda's north African branch.<br />
<br />
Western 
governments are increasingly worried about the threat posed by Islamist 
groups across Africa, from Mali and Algeria in the Sahara to Kenya in 
the east, where fighters from the Somali al-Shabaab group killed at 
least 67 people in an attack on a Nairobi shopping mall last month.</blockquote>

Families of the five Pakistani nationals on board an oil vessel, Mt 
Matrix 1, abducted last Saturday at 40 nautical miles off the Bayelsa 
coast have told the management of the company, Matrix Energy, in Warri, 
Delta State, not to pay any ransom to the abductors to get them 
released, promising to take revenge on Nigerians in their hundreds in 
Pakistan, if any of the victims was killed.<br /><br />The abducted victims 
include the Captain, Chief Officer, cook and two others. They were 
conveying automated gasoline oil, AGO, from Lagos to Eket, when they 
were abducted at 9pm.<br />
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=5438533803477296299" name="more"></a><br /><br />Sources said that relevant security agencies in Bayelsa State and Warri in Delta State, had been informed of the incident.<br /><br />The
 source added  that the company had begun negotiation with the 
abductors, but that details of negotiations with the company on ransom 
were not disclosed.

A former army general and major player during Nigeria’s decades of military rule, Major General <strong>Mamman Kontagora</strong>, is dead.<br />
<br />

Mr. Kontagora, born on April 20, 1944, died on Wednesday night according to a statement by the Governors Forum.<br />
<br />

The deceased is from Kontagora in <a href="http://www.nigerstate.gov.ng/" target="_blank">Niger State </a>and
 was a former military administrator of the Federal Capital Territory, 
Abuja, during the regime of General Abdulsalami Abubakar.<br />
<br />

The retired soldier cum politician, 69, was also a former works 
minister during the regime of Ibrahim Babangida. He vied for the <a href="http://www.peoplesdemocraticparty.net/" target="_blank">Peoples Democratic Party</a> presidential ticket in 2007.

President Goodluck Jonathan’s benefactor and former Governor of 
Bayelsa State, Chief Diepriye Alamieyeseigha, has told all who care to 
listen that there is no <a href="http://www.informationng.com/2013/05/2015-theres-no-vacancy-in-aso-rock-alamieyeseigha.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter#" id="_GPLITA_0" style="text-decoration: underline;" title="Click to Continue > by Browse to Save">vacancy</a> in Aso Rock because his protégé will remain the Commander-in-Chief beyond 2015.<br />

Alamieyeseigha
 said: “Aso Rock is not vacant. The northern agitators will all at the 
appropriate time join the moving train. They may have their opinion but I
 can assure you that President Jonathan will remain as the President of 
the Federal Republic of Nigeria, come 2015″.<br />
<br />
Baring his mind on 
the presidential pardon granted to him by the Council of State, 
Alamieyeseigha said it was a negotiated deal which started under the 
late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s tenure and that it is in order.<br />
<br />
He
 said: “It was a pardon that was negotiated. This pardon was negotiated 
and if I fulfil my own part of the bargain, why shouldn’t the Federal 
Government fulfills its part? People who don’t know what happened are 
the ones talking. But if I opened my mouth, those who are talking will 
keep quiet.<br />
<br />
He said: “President Goodluck Jonathan was part of the 
negotiating team. There is no person in this country that knows issues 
surrounding Alamieyeseigha better than Mr President. He was my deputy 
governor and all that transpired were known to him. I’m already writing 
my memoir. At the appropriate time, you will know.”<br />
<br />
In a veiled 
attack at former President – Olusegun Obasanjo, Alamieyeseigha said, 
“without Yar’Adua, I would have died by now. Otherwise they would have 
even killed me. The person behind it is somebody all of you know. 
Somebody used the phrase, Oga at the top. You know him and he will be 
exposed at the right time.”<br />

With an unusual grandstanding and harsh words, the Nigerian military 
today warned political office holders and civil servants that the 
nation’s armed forces are already running out of patience with the 
manner things are going in the country especially the unbridled looting 
of public funds and undue interference in the runnings of military 
operations.<br />
<br />
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Admiral Ola Sa’ad Ibrahim and the Chief
 of Army Staff, Lt.Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika issued the threats separately
 today though in a manner that suggests that their decision to make the 
declaration was predetermined and coordinated. They both spoke in their 
offices in Abuja while receiving the new Permanent Secretary posted to 
the Ministry of Defence, Aliyu Ismaila. The CDS who fired the first shot
 at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) categorically declared that the 
military was fast running out of patience with the “pile of mess” being 
created in the polity as reflected in the runnings of the Ministry of 
Defence.<br />
<br />
“You find too many stories about grandstanding, stories about 
procurement. I hope your tour of duty will focus on these issues. I will
 close this my response by saying that you inherited a pile of work, let
 me call it work, some call it pile of mess. You have to clear it up”, 
the CDS warned while referring to the corruption rooted in the MOD.<br />
<br />

Also speaking in the same tone, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), 
Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika warned that the military have had 
enough from political office holders in the MOD interfering in their 
operational issues. He condemned the practice where civilians in the 
ministry preside over the procurement of military logistics and 
operations vehicles amongst others without the involvement of relevant 
service chiefs.<br />
