arrested by operatives of Special Fraud Unit, Ikoyi, for allegedly swindling
foreign women to the tune of $48,000 through a dating website.</span></strong></div>

Surprisingly, the 22-year-old Microbiology undergraduate 
confessed that his victims, resident in the United States of America, 
were ‘swept off their feet’ by his profile on the dating site.<br />
<br />
The suspects are Chibuzor Akobundu (Devon Miles, Martin Williams and Sani Bala Ismaila1st left), and other alleged accomplices.<br />
<br />
He
 spoke with journalists yesterday, while being paraded alongside two 
staff of a second generation bank, who allegedly facilitated the 
withdrawal of money via Western Union Money Transfer.<br />
<br />
The suspect 
adopted Devon Miles as his name and pasted a photograph of an unknown 
American citizen as his profile on the dating site.<br />
<br />
<strong>Victims</strong><br />
He confessed to have swindled five American single women within the ages of 40 and 50, in search for husbands.<br />
<br />
He
 gave the name of his first victim as Antoinette. He promised to marry 
her and was able to dupe her of $16,000 before she suspected he was a 
fraudster.<br />
<br />
His next victim was one Jettie Simpson, who reportedly sent $5,000 to him via Western Union.<br />
<br />
Others
 also duped by Akobundu were Shelly Bashir, $100; Billie Klock, $13,000,
 in a relationship that reportedly lasted for five months, and Andrea 
Desena, $8,000.<br />
<br />
<strong>‘How I operate’</strong><br />
Akobundu said: “I started browsing the dating site three years ago, posing as a US citizen residing in Nigeria.<br />
“At that time, it was a common game around my area in Ikeja. Along the line I met these ladies who were looking for husbands.<br />
<br />
“They
 fell in love with me because of my profile, where I stated that I was a
 49-year-old divorcee in search of a wife. I claimed to be an engineer.<br />
<br />
“I
 would tell them I was stranded in Nigeria and needed some money to 
travel back to US and they would send the money via Western Union.<br />
<br />
“At
 other times, I would tell them that my daughter was sick and that I 
needed money to offset her hospital bill and they would fall for the 
trick. I have never used charm to hypnotise any of them.<br />

“My
 parents were never aware of what I was into because anytime I got a 
reasonable amount, I would travel to South Africa and squander the 
money.<br />
<br />
“My regret is that I never used the money for anything 
tangible, to avoid suspicion. My mum is a teacher, while my father is a 
businessman and have been responsible for the payment of my school 
fees.”<br />
<br />
<strong>Victim’s story</strong><br />
Explaining how he was
 arrested, spokesperson for the Unit, Ngozi Insitume-Agu, said: “The 
arrest followed a petition via the Unit’s website from one Amelia 
Brosick, a US citizen, dated April 16, 2013, where she alleged that one 
Devon Miles, suspected to be a Nigerian, defrauded her to the tune of 
$16,439 using different tactics.<br />
<br />
“She added that she met the 
suspect on a dating site in June 2012, and the suspect, under the guise 
of dating her for the purpose of marriage, obtained the alleged sum 
fraudulently through Western Union.<br />
<br />
“Armed with the petition, 
Western Union was contacted and they sent a detailed spread sheet 
showing all the transfers in the name of the suspect.<br />
<br />
“Following 
the information, the duo of Nnamdi Nwakwue Dike and Olawale Oguniran 
attached to Western Union in Skye Bank, Owerri and Allen Avenue, Ikeja, 
branches, respectively, were arrested.<br />
<br />
“Their revealing statements
 led to the arrest of the serial internet fraudster, Chibuzor Akobundun 
also known as Devon Miles, Martin Williams and Sani Bala Ismaila. He 
adopted Devon as the internet name, but opened the account in the name 
of Martin Williams.<br />
<br />
<strong>Accomplices confess</strong><br />
“He
 confessed that he provided the bank staff with the photocopy of his 
identity card so that they could withdraw the monies, while he gave them
 some percentage.<br />
<br />
“The bank staff also confessed that they used 
Uche’s particulars to withdraw money from other persons’ accounts 
without his knowledge.”<br />
<br />
However, Dike of the Owerri branch denied 
knowledge of what Akobundun was into. He maintained that he was only 
doing his job as a front-line teller staff of the bank, adding that he 
had never at any time paid Akobundu above the stipulated amount.<br />
<br />
He said: “Anytime he came to collect the money, he would answer the question given  correctly, including the secret code.<br />
<br />
“Mine
 is to ascertain whether the details corresponded with what was in the 
system at the end of which I would hand his money over to him.”<br />
<br />
Asked
 if he received any gratification from Akobundu, he said he was given 
tips of N1,000 or N2,000 at times, just like some other bank customers 
do.</div>

<em>The Imo state police command has arrested a 64 year-old 
man, Mr Chimezie Osigweh on whose property a 10-year old embalmed corpse
 was found.</em></div>

Mr Osigweh, a retired principal and a strong devotee of the Guru 
Maharaji Sect who was alleged to have mysteriously killed his mother 10 
years ago and since 2003, kept the embalmed corpse of his mother in a 
large cupboard inside a shrine of a private room in a circumstance 
depicting ritual practice.<br />
<br />

While parading the suspect at his temple in a village called Ezuru 
Umuagwu in Oguta Local Government area of Imo state, the Imo state 
commissioner of Police Mohammed Katsina said preliminary investigations 
revealed that instead of burying the mother the normal way, Mr Osigweh 
kept the embalmed body of Mrs Lucy Osigweh in his temple for ritual 
purposes where he and other members of his sect used to hold secret 
nocturnal meetings to enhance their occultic powers.<br />
<br />

Mr Chimezie Osigweh was identified as a retired principal of 
Community secondary school, Awa, in Oguta Local government area of Imo 
state and a strong member of the Guru Maharaji sect.<br />
<br />

He was arrested alongside 2 other worshipers at his temple where he kept the embalmed corpse of his late Mother.<br />
<br />

Osigweh who confessed to be a Guru Maharaji member for 24years denied
 that he intentionally killed his mother. He however refused to disclose
 why he kept the mother’s embalmed corpse in the cupboard for 10 years 
saying it is not what he can openly disclose.<br />
<br />

Meanwhile, villagers and family members have said that they suspect 
Osigweh of diabolical acts, stating that he has kept noticeable distance
 from everyone.<br />
<br />

They disclosed that he was never married. His relatives who were at 
the scene of crime said when asked, he would tell lies that the mother 
traveled to the United states to see his siblings or sometimes she is 
receiving treatment in the hospital.<br />
<br />

The Imo state Police commissioner Mohammed Katsina while speaking to 
journalists said the Command has started making further investigations 
into the case and will ensure that they unravel every mystery behind it 
to the public as soon as they get more information.<br />
<br />

In the meantime, the suspect will remain in the police custody and if found guilty, will be charged for first class murder.

Imo State Police Command recorded another success in its renewed 
fight against crime and criminals, following the bursting of child 
trafficking and baby factory syndicate in the state.</blockquote>

Disclosing this to newsmen Thursday evening, at the State Police 
Headquarters, Owerri, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Katsina, 
said the Command has clamped down on illegal motherless babies homes, as
 well as rescued 17 pregnant teenagers. (Some of the pregnant teens pictured above)<br />

According to the Imo police boss, one of the illegal homes, Ahamefula
 Motherless Babies Home, located in Umuaka, Njaba local council area, is
 allegedly owned by a middle aged woman simply identified as “Madam One 
Thousand”.<br />
<br />

Mr. Katsina equally disclosed that during the police raid, no fewer 
than 11 minors, who were possibly waiting to be sold to prospective 
buyers, were rescued by the Command.<br />
<br />

The bizarre aspect of the police finding was that a 23-year old boy, 
simply identified as Oyibo, was fingered as being responsible for 
impregnating the expectant girls, whose ages ranged between 14 and 17.<br />
<br />

Apart from being in varying stages of pregnancy, the girls who 
equally looked malnourished and not properly catered for wept 
uncontrollably as they were paraded by the police in Owerri.<br />
<br />
On how the Command burst the syndicate, the Commissioner explained 
that the illegal babies home was successfully raided by the “Ambush 
Squad” after a credible tip-off.<br />
<br />

“The prime suspect is now at large. She was was producing pure water 
sachets as a decoy to deceive unsuspecting members of the public about 
what was really going on in the premises”, the Commissioner of Police 
recounted.<br />
<br />

Continuing, Mr. Katsina said: “When the police invaded the tightly 
secured compound, 17 minors were seen holed up in different rooms in the
 large compound with some of their children playing around”.<br />
<br />

The Imo police boss equally paraded the 55-year old security man, Mr.
 Uzoamaka Okoli, from Nempi, Oru West local government area of the 
state, employed by the fleeing owner of the babies home.<br />

The 23-year old Oyibo, who was equally paraded by the Commissioner, 
has allegedly confessed to being responsible for all the pregnancies.

The convoy of the Governor of Imo State; Mr Rochas Okorocha has been 
involved in a head-on collision in Orlu local government area of the 
state and the governor sustained minor head injuries. This happened 
during his inspection tour to some state projects in the area.<br />
<br />
According to his media aide, “the governor sustained a minor injury 
which is a minor cut on his head but he is presently in a good and 
stable condition and has been attended to by medical personnel.” He 
asked Imo State citizens not to panic and go about with their normal 
duties since the Governor is in a good and stable condition and 
responding to necessary treatment.

After series of intrigues, the newly appointed Deputy Governor of Imo 
State, 48-year-old Prince Eze Madumere, was sworn-in Saturday amid tight
 security at the Sam Mbakwe Expanded Executive Council Chambers, 
Government House, Owerri.<br /><br />Madumere’s name was submitted to the 
27-member Imo State House of Assembly, presided by Benjamin Uwajimogu, 
after the impeachment of Sir Jude Agbaso, for “gross misconduct of 
office and bribery”.<br /><br />He was screened and cleared after a seven–man panel headed by Justice Godwin Ihekire (rtd) submitted a report indicting Agbaso.<br />

the swearing-in event.<br /><br />Madumere said he would remain loyal to 
Okorocha whom he described as his mentor of several years. “Circumstance
 has made me the Deputy Governor of Imo State. I was comfortable as 
Chief of Staff,” he said. He swore that he never sought to become Deputy
 Governor.<br /><br />Madumere wished Agbaso well.<br /><br />Okorocha said: “This is the day the Lord has made, and we shall rejoice and be glad indeed.”<br /><br />Okorocha urged the new Deputy not to be selfish, but rather discharge his duties as promised.<br /><br />He regretted that Agbaso, whom he cherished, was booted out of office in ignominy.<br /><br />“Let me use this opportunity to wish him well,” the governor said, adding that he stands by the wishes of the people.<br /><br />Source: <b>The Guardian</b>
