A policeman on Tuesday evening allegedly shot dead a pregnant woman in Akure, Ondo State.</div>

Our correspondent learnt that the 
incident occurred around 6pm when the policeman, who was attached to the
 Ijapo police post, allegedly demanded a N20 bribe from the driver of a 
cab conveying the woman to her destination.</div>

Eyewitnesses said the driver who was 
heading for the Akoko area of the state in a Nissan Almera car with 
number plate, Ondo KAA 80 AAA, refused to meet the demand of the 
policeman for a bribe.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The furious policeman allegedly fired a 
shot which pierced through the car and hit the pregnant woman sitting in
 the front of the car.</div>

The woman was confirmed dead at a government hospital where she was rushed to.</div>

The source said, “The policeman took to 
his heels after sensing the gravity of his action and to avoid the wrath
 of the people around.</div>

“The angry mob, however, went to the station, made a bonfire and consequently destroyed the police post.”</div>

Armed mobile policemen drafted to the 
police post on Wednesday prevented journalists from taking pictures of 
the police post destroyed by the angry mob.</div>

The state Public Relations Officer of the
 state police command, Mr. Wole Ogodo, who confirmed the incident, said 
the officer had been dismissed.</div>
