A banker, Mr Theophilus Ajakaiye, has been sentenced to death by hanging by
an Abia State High Court for the October 12, 2009 murder of his wife, Theodora
at Azumini Ndoki in the Ukwa Judicial Division of the state.<br />
<br />

The charge read, “The accused person is charged with one-count of murder
contrary to Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Vol. 11, Cap 30 Laws of
Eastern Nigeria, 1963, applicable in Abia State.”<br />

Until her death, Theodora was an employee of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc. Her
murder had set off a legal battle between her family and the accused.<br />
<br />

In his judgment, the Presiding Judge, Justice T.U. Uzokwe, said that having
heard from the accused person, learned counsel for the accused and the
prosecuting counsel, the offence carried a mandatory sentence which is death.<br />
<br />

He said that the court had no power to reduce the sentence and that being
the case; he had no option but to sentence the accused.<br />
<br />

The judge said, “Though the accused was not seen killing the deceased, I
find that the accumulated circumstantial facts proved that the accused indeed
murdered his wife, Theodora Ajakaiye.<br />

“Suffice it to say that I find the accused guilty as charged and I convict
him accordingly.”<br />
<br />

The sentence read, “Theophilus Ajakaiye – the sentence of this court upon
you is that you be hanged by the neck until you be dead and may the merciful
Lord have mercy on your soul.”<br />

In the allocutus, counsel for the accused pleaded mercy on behalf of his
client.<br />
<br />

He said, “I thank the court for this well-considered judgment. The accused
has no criminal record. We plead for mercy. There are two children to the
marriage and they have already lost their mother. <br />

Dolapo Badru, said this on Thursday during a press conference in Ikeja.</div>

Reacting to the civil society organisations’s condemnation of the 
government’s clampdown on beggars, he said the present administration 
respected the rights of persons living with disabilities, adding that 
government would, however, not bend the law when such groups of persons 
fall foul of the law.<br />
<br />

He said, “Nearly everyday when my men go on enforcement, this same 
set of people draw daggers and knives on my staff; they stab and bite 
them to evade arrest because they broke the law and when such a person 
is taken to court to be convicted, a person sits down in his 
air-conditioned office raining abuses on us for doing what is right.”<br />
<br />

He noted that some of those convicted posed as beggars in the traffic
 to rob unsuspecting motorists. He vowed that government would not stop 
its clampdown on them until the trend was nipped in the bud.<br />

He said the 1,708 beggars and destitute ejected from the state were 
either sent back to their states of origin, while foreigners among them 
were repatriated.<br />

He said the rehabilitation office dealt with the issues of begging 
and destitution in the state and that in line with the government’s 
policy of ridding the streets of such persons, the office had 
consistently embarked on an aggressive raid of beggars, mentally 
challenged and the destitute from the streets, highways and bridges of 
Lagos.<br />
<br />

Badru stated that the mode of getting this category of persons into 
the rehabilitation centres was by referrals from members of the public 
and rescue operations carried out by the Office of Youth and Social 
Development.<br />
<br />

He said, “In the last one year, a total number of 3,114 beggars, 
destitute persons and mentally challenged were rescued in day and night 
operations.<br />
<br />

“No fewer than 2,695 were taken to the Rehabilitation and Training 
Centre, Owutu, Ikorodu, where government has provided facilities to help
 in turning their lives around.<br />
<br />

“Forty-eight children and toddlers were transferred to the Child 
Protection Unit; another 48 street children, cleaning windscreens at 
intersections, were rescued and transferred to the Special Correctional 
Centre for Boys, Oregun; eight were transferred to the Child Transit 
Home, Idi Araba, while 315 Persons (203 male and 54 female) suspected to
 be criminals were handed over to the task force for prosecution.”<br />

A Lagos landlord, Dotun Osinsanya, was yesterday arraigned before an 
Ikeja Magistrate Court for allegedly stealing N12.9 million belonging to
 his tenants, one Tunji Komolafe and Victor Chilaka and also locking up 
their office.<br />
<br />

Osinsanya, 55, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and breach of peace.<br />

The complainants rented part of Osinsanya’s property which they used as an office.<br />

The police prosecutor, Samson Ekikere, informed the court and the 
presiding Magistrate Oshodi Makanju, that the alleged incident occurred 
on March 20, 2013 at about 11a.m at 27, Adeleke Street in Ikeja area of 
Lagos.<br />

According to him, the defendant stole the following property: Plasma 
TV valued at N85,000, two Dstv decoders, N24,000; water dispenser, 
N76,000; displaying board, N45,000;  chairs and tables, N1,400 and video
 machine, N205,000,<br />
<br />

Welding machine N560,000; two split unit ACs N168,000; four laptops 
N520,000; cash in account office N350,000; complete set of Nular 
N8,400,000; law textbooks N80,000; one laptop N100,000; LLB and call to 
bar certificate; recycling seat N355,000; one Rolex gold wrist watch 
N100,000; one UPS N10,000; one stabilizer N5000; two extension board 
N5000; total N12.908,000 all belonging to Komolafe and Chilaka.<br />
<br />

The defendant who pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge levelled
 against him by the police was granted bail in the sum of N1 million 
with two sureties in like sum.<br />

Magistrate Makanjuola adjourned the matter to May 24, 2013.<br />

A 22-year-old man, Julius Aboy was yesterday sentenced to death for 
stealing N955, 600 by a Delta State High Court sitting in Warri. The 
trial judge, Justice Marshal Mukoro of High Court 1, who handed down the
 sentence told the convict that he is to die by hanging.<br />
<br />

The convict was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy to 
commit armed robbery and armed robbery, offences punishable under 
Sections 6(b) and 1(2)(a) respectively of the Robbery and Firearms 
(Special Provisions) Act Cap. RII Volume 14, Laws of the Federation of 
Nigeria, 2004.<br />
<br />

In the first count, Julius Aboy and others now at large were reported
 to have on or about the 4th day of March, 2011 in Warri, conspired with
 others now at large to commit armed robbery.<br />
<br />

In the second count, Julius Aboy and others now at large were also 
reported to have, on or about the 4th day of March, 2011 in Warri, 
robbed one Godwin Gwuene of N955, 600, while armed with a gun. The <a href="http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/man-22-to-die-by-hanging-for-stealing-n955-600/#" id="_GPLITA_0" style="text-decoration: underline;" title="Click to Continue > by Browse to Save">money</a> was said to be Ususu contribution (savings), belonging to workers, serving as cleaners in a company in Warri.<br />
<br />

The armed robbery gang, of which Aboy was allegedly a member, ran out
 of luck when an oncoming vehicle knocked down their getaway motorbike 
at the scene of the crime, leading to the arrest of the convict and 
killing of another member of the gang by an angry mob.<br />
<br />

Justice Mukoro said the excuse of poverty, which the convict gave as 
reason of dropping out of school and venturing into crime was not 
tenable, as poverty was not a licence for criminality.<br />
