Chief Security Officer to the late General Sanni Abacha, Major Hamza 
Al-Mustapha who was released last Friday by the Court of Appeal relates 
his 15-year prison experiences saying he moved from prison to prison and
 sometimes was placed in solitary confinement.<br /><br />The apparently 
jubilant Al-Mustapha who spoke with BBC Hausa Service yesterday revealed
 that his 15 years in prison were a test of his life...<br /><br />Last 
year, a Lagos High Court had sentenced Major Hamza Al-Mustapha to death 
by hanging in connection with the death of Kudrat Abiola, wife of the 
acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. But on 
Friday, the Court of Appeal discharged and acquitted him, making him a 
free man once again, after 15 years.<br />
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=5438533803477296299" name="more"></a><br /><br />A Lagos High Court had sentenced you to death
 by hanging, but this new judgement by the Court of Appeal has set you 
free; how do you feel? The Almighty God has shown, through the Court of 
Appeal, that there was a grand plan to destroy us. But we handed 
everything over to God. In the past 15 years, a lot of things happened, 
just to show the world that, no matter what the people think of us, we 
stand by the truth.<br /><br />How would you consider the 15 years you spent in prison?<br />Every
 Muslim who believes in God will know that one day he may find himself 
in a very difficult situation. I saw myself in very difficult 
conditions. I was detained in over 32 places, including KiriKiri. I do 
not think that any other person has suffered this kind of incarceration 
in Nigeria. I am the only person that has been treated this way. For 
five years and two months I was in a solitary prison across different 
states of the federation. The nine years and seven months I spent in 
Ikoyi, Kirikiri and the Kuje prison in Abuja were not different.<br /><br />What will be your relationship with those considered to be behind your ordeal?<br />God
 created people differently. And He has different ways of testing 
individuals. Some people will be tested with positions of leadership, 
some with wealth, while others will be tested with poverty or illness. 
We have forgiven those behind this incarceration. This is so because 
they may have acted out of ignorance. They may have been tested by God 
and they did not understand what they were doing.<br />In my 15 years in 
detention, there was the accusation, as well as the conspiracy that I 
attempted to overthrow the government in three different occasions. I 
was arrested, but thank God that nothing incriminating was found against
 me.<br />There were other accusations - that Abacha’s belongings were in 
my possession; that I had a strong connection with Gaddafi; and that I 
smuggled bombs into the country. I was arrested on such accusations. The
 fact is that they were just looking for anything, including what 
happened in the past, to enable them put me permanently in detention.<br /><br />Now that you are free, would you be interested in politics in the future?<br />No!
 I am a military man, I am not thinking of politics. I spent 15 years in
 solitary confinement, so I do not know what is happening in Nigeria 
presently; I am just a guest. However, only God knows what will happen 
tomorrow.<br /><br />What did you learn in prison?<br />I really learnt many 
things. I learnt more than what you can imagine. I had the opportunity 
to understand Nigeria very well. I now understand the country’s justice 
system, issues of human rights, how some people use the judiciary and 
power against the poor, the patience of the poor in Nigeria. It was also
 an opportunity to understand my religion very well. <br /><br />Prison is 
another university that nobody wants to attend. There is a blessing of 
sorts in the prison if one understands what is in it, through God’s 
guidance. Yes, it is really not easy to be in prison; everyday in it is

Joshua, the founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) 
said his relationship with Al-Mustapha has come a long way reportedly 
claiming he had foretold Al-Mustapha’s release which explains his 
courtesy visit to his ministry.<br />

In the interview below, Halima 
Babingida, who escorted Al-Mustapha to see Joshua got the leader of the 
Synagogue to talk on why the visit was expedient.</div>

  <strong>  Can you tell us the purpose of Al-Mustapha’s visit to you?</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
    I got to know him many years ago 
when a petition was addressed to General Bamaiyi who was the then 
Chairman of the NDLEA. As you know, several efforts had been made by my 
detractors to bring me and my ministry down. One of those efforts was 
that petition. I was arrested for investigation and it was later 
discovered that it was a tissue of lies.

    I spent nine days with them for 
investigation and they found the whole thing to be a fabrication. From 
there, I was taken to Aso Rock to see the president. It was there that I
 met Mustapha.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
    I was able to reveal to them who I 
am by telling them what was to come as a prophet. One of those things I 
mentioned to them and to Mustapha in particular, was what he went 
through, though he did not believe me then.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
    That was why when it came to pass, I
 was the first person he remembered. I told him that he would spend 
several years in prison and would be finally released which no one else 
had ever told him.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
    That is why you see him coming here as his first port of call. Where there is no vision, people perish.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
    I am surprised you are asking me why
 he is coming here first. When you look into your archives as 
journalists, you will find many stories in the past about my visit to 
Aso Rock, while Bamaiyi was Chairman of NDLEA. Many magazines and 
newspapers published my visions and prophecies on the government and the
 presidency.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
    When you know your picture of 
tomorrow, it will impart a strength to endure your present difficulty. 
When you know what you are passing through now will not last long, you 
will endure it. This is vision; this is prophecy. This can only come by 
revelation. This is what the Bible means by, “Where there is no vision, 
the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18). I will leave you here.</div>

In a highly controversial step, a panel of justices of the Nigerian Court of Appeal today ruled that retired Colonel Hamza Al Mustapha, a former confidante of Nigeria’s late dictator, General Sani Abacha, must be set free of a murder conviction for the June 4, 1996 assassination of Kudirat Abiola, a wife of Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Mr. Al Mustapha, who served as Chief Security Officer to Mr. Abacha, was earlier convicted by a Lagos High Court on charges of authorizing, planning and overseeing the murder of Ms. Abiola, who was shot in one of the streets of Lagos as she drove to an appointment. The killing of Mr. Abiola’s wife shocked Nigerians and the world, and made the name Kudirat one of the most revered icons of the Nigerian struggle to force the military from political power. Mr. Abacha, whose regime epitomized the height of military repression, died suddenly in November, 1997, in the midst of an amorous soiree with three young prostitutes. His death brought to an end Mr. Mustapha’s reign as the most powerful member of a small power-drunk clique that carried out Mr. Abacha’s repressive agenda, sometimes by physically eliminating the late dictator’s most visible opponents.

A Court of Appeal presided over by Justice Amina Augie today ruled that the Lagos High Court that convicted Mr. Mustapha for the murder of Ms. Abiola was “stroked to secure a conviction by all means.” On January 30, 2013, the high court had sentenced Mr. Mustapha to death for conspiracy to commit murder.
But the appellate court’s acquittal of Mr. Mustapha is bound to raise judicial dust, said an Abuja-based lawyer familiar with the case. He said the stage for today's ruling had been set when a no-nonsense judge earlier involved in the case withdrew for inexplicable reasons and was replaced by Justice Amina Augie, who headed the panel. The source described Justice Augie as “one of the justices on the Court of Appeal who is linked to judicial corruption.”
Earlier, SaharaReporters had done an expose on a conspiracy between Justice Augie and a top lawyer, Joseph Bodunrin Daudu, a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, to work on a deal to secure Mr. Mustapha’s release.
Justice Augie and Mr. Daudu also “”worked together” in the corruption case against former Governor James Onanefe Ibori of Delta State. Justice Augie wrote and read a decision ordering that Mr. Ibori’s prosecution be moved from a Kaduna court to a high court in Delta State. SaharaReporters reported that Mr. Ibori had engineered the judgment knowing full well that prosecution witnesses would be terrified to appear against him in Asaba, the Delta State capital, where Mr. Ibori could easily mobilize thugs and other forms of witness intimidation.
Mr. Ibori was subsequently acquitted on 170 counts of money laundering and corruption during his eight-year tenure as governor. However, he was convicted by a court in London on some of the same charges and sentenced to a 13-year jail sentence.
A lawyer who was in court today said the appellate court’s decision to free Al Mustapha was “an unfortunate display of judicial politics, to say the least, and will send the wrong signal that highly connected people can easily get away with impunity in this country.”
