It's my job to keep you updated, so here's what's up at the moment, 
dearies - Uganda's President Museveni has signed the country's anti-gay 
bill into law, despite warnings from US President Barack Obama that it 
would “complicate our valued relationship” and will mark a “step 
backward” for all Ugandans and reflect poorly on the country’s 
commitment to protect the human rights of its people<br />
<br />
The bill states that first-time offenders will be sentenced to 14 years 
in jail. Then life imprisonment for repeat offenders, as well as acts 
involving a minor, a disabled person or where one partner is infected 
with HIV.<br />
<br />

The bill originally proposed the death penalty for some homosexual acts,
 but that was later removed amid international criticism. <br />
<br />
In December last year, Uganda’s Parliament passed  the bill but 
President Yoweri Museveni said he would only sign the bill into law if 
he had proof that gay people are ‘made’ and ‘not born’ into their 
sexuality. And last week he changed his stand, saying a team of Ugandan 
scientists had reported that there is no evidence that homosexuality is 
caused by genetics. <br />
<br />
However, over the weekend in South Africa, former archbishop Desmond 
Tutu had criticised President Museveni for supporting the bill, 
describing it as “evil”.</div>

Former member of the House of Representatives and executive secretary of
 Anti-Corruption Network (ACN), Otunba Dino Melaye, yesterday in Abuja 
said he has instituted a court case against former Niger Delta warlord, 
Asari Dokubo for threatening to cause mayhem in the country if President
 Goodluck Jonathan is not re-elected in 2015.<br /> <br />He also accused 
President Goodluck Jonathan of trying to divide members of the Rivers 
State House of Assembly with oil blocks allocation to impeach Governor 
Rotimi Amaechi who has been at loggerheads with the president.<br /> <br />“This
 morning, my lawyers instituted a case against Asari Dokubo, all hands 
must be on deck to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria and its 
citizenry,” Melaye said.<br /> <br />On the Jonathan/Amaechi face-off, he 
said, “we heard this morning (yesterday) that the president is trying to
 use oil blocks to woo members of Rivers State House of Assembly who are
 loyal to Amaechi. We will not allow personal interest to plan a manhunt
 and inducement of the legislators against the governor. We support the 
openness, frankness and independence with which Amaechi is confronting 
his personal political interest.”<br /> <br />Melaye also challenged the 
presidency to come out openly and prosecute Amaechi if they have 
tangible criminal case against him or stop the unending harassment of 
the governor.<br /> <br />He said that “although the House of Reps has 
passed a motion that the State House of Assembly should be reopened, the
 police have locked down the place. We have seen the systematic approach
 of the president in hunting down any opposition against his ambition in
 2015. We will do everything within the law to ensure the president does
 not use the powers of his office to blackmail or intimidate anybody.<br /> <br />
 “Today, it is Amaechi, tomorrow it could be Aliyu, Fashola or 
Kwankwaso. We are going to mobilise Nigerians against the oppressive 
tendency of President Jonathan,” he said.

President Jonathan has declared an indefinite state of emergency in 
three Northern states, Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, citing insecurity. He 
made the announcement in a nationwide live broadcast this evening. With 
this declaration, the president has given the military the authority to 
take over the security of the states, though all political office 
holders in the states would still continue in office.<br />
<br />
President Jonathan said the efforts at dialogue with militants will 
continue but will take extra ordinary measures to maintain peace. He 
immediately ordered troops to be deployed to the states to arrest and 
detain suspected terrorists, take over of suspicious buildings, and 
detain persons suspected to be in possession of arms. On terrorism, he

A can of worms is about to be let loose by the highly hunted governor of
 Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi. He said the time is finally at hand for 
him to expose all  the Abuja-based politicians who are after the 
resources of the State instead of the welfare of all Nigerians.</div>

Questionmark Entertainment boss, Kevin Lucciano Gabriel, yesterday April 27th emerged as the new interim president of 
the Performing Musician Association of Nigerian (PMAN).<br />

Lucciano was 
appointed after his opponent Mr Skid Ikemefuna stepped down. Popular 
90's musician Mike Okri will serve as Lucciano's deputy. Okri defeated 
Oritz Wiliki for the post of PMAN deputy president. Singer Azeezat

President of Gambia Yahya Jammeh has warned that any gay or lesbians found in his country will “regret” being born.<br />
<br />

Jammeh, who has led<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-13376517" target="_hplink"> Gambia since a bloodless coup in 1994</a>, recently said <a href="http://www.freedomnewspaper.com/Homepage/tabid/36/newsid367/8550/Jammeh-Says-Gambias-Growing-Murder-Rate-Will-Lead-To-The-Moratorium-On-The-Execution-Of-Death-Row-Inmates-Being-Lifted-Without-Any-Further-Notice/Default.aspx" target="_hplink">during a speech on March 28</a> at the opening of the country’s parliament Gambia’s Freedom Newspaper reported.<br />
<br />

“Homosexuality is anti-humanity. I have never seen homosexual 
chicken, or turkey,” Jammeh said, according to the Freedom Newspaper. 
“If you are convicted of homosexuality in this country, there will be no
 mercy for offenders.”<br />
<br />

“Homosexuality is anti-god, anti-human, and anti-civilization. 
Homosexuals are not welcome in the Gambia. If we catch you, you will 
regret why you are born. I have buffalos from South Africa and Brazil 
and they never date each other. We are ready to eat grass but we will 
not compromise on this. Allowing homosexuality means allowing satanic 
rights. We will not allow gays here.”<br />
<br />

In April 2012, for example, the leader opened the legislative year by
 maintaining no foreign aid incentives would ever cause him to change 
his mind on homosexuality, a criminal offense in <a href="https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ga.html" target="_hplink">the predominantly Muslim country.</a> </blockquote>

“Sometimes you hear of a lot of noise about the laws of this country or my pronouncements,” <a href="http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/jammeh-condemns-homosexual-practices-as-he-opens-2012-legislative-year" target="_hplink">Jammeh said at the time, according to The Point Newspaper in Banjul, Gambia</a>.
 “Let me make it very clear that, if you want me to offend God for you 
to give me aid, you are making a great mistake; you will not bribe me to
 do what is evil and ungodly.” </blockquote>

And in 2008, Jammeh said <a href="http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jFPEgkBOpcwPt8WLJBGKKDJT5ZJQ?docId=CNG.e12e3cc2502c6eda2f974e27df549661.3c1" target="_hplink">he would “cut off the head” of any gay person caught in the country</a>, a threat he later retracted, according to Agence France-Presse. </blockquote>

Despite Jammeh’s anti-gay stance, <a href="http://banjul.usembassy.gov/welcome-content2.html" target="_hplink">the United States still maintains an Embassy in the country</a>.
 Having lifted sanctions in 2002, the U.S. provides humanitarian, 
democracy-building and education assistance, according to the U.S 
Embassy website. The Gambian government, meanwhile, “has provided 
steadfast, tangible support for the war on terrorism,” the U.S. Embassy 
notes. </blockquote>
<blockquote>
Dr. Stefan Baral, a public health specialist and human rights 
advocate who has studied Gambia’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
 (LGBT) population, said in a phone interview that Jammeh is not just a 
talking head. Baral told The Huffington Post that Gambians don’t ignore 
pronouncements like Jammeh’s last week, especially since such statements
 come with the backing of the country’s powerful Imams. </blockquote>
<blockquote>
Anti-gay rhetoric is also a developing public health issue, according
 to Baral, as HIV prevalence in Gambia is relatively high. The people 
the government should be supporting are the people it is discriminating 
against the most, he told HuffPost. Countries like the U.S. might 
consider this a human rights issue, he said, but Jammeh’s attitude is 
the LGBT community is not human. </blockquote>

Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji has called on Igbo resident in the
 northern part of the country to return home if the bombings and 
killings persist.<br />
<br />

This came following the recent motor park bombing in Kano which left many Ndigbo dead and scores injured.<br />
<br />

According to Orji, if Ndigbo are continuously being massacred in the 
North, it portrayed that they were not accepted and the best option for 
them was to think home where their safety was guaranteed.<br />
<br />

He said, “No sane person will continue living in an atmosphere where his life is at stake.”<br />
<br />

He said home remains the most comfortable place for anyone whose life was in danger.<br />
<br />

On the death of Prof. Chinua Achebe, Orji said that though he was a 
respected Igbo son, his death had not created political leadership 
vacuum for Ndi Igbo because he was not a political leader of Ndi Igbo 
but a literary icon.<br />

He  maintained that Ndi Igbo still had leaders, but noted that the 
problem of Ndigbo was who to galvanise the rest of the people and give 
them focus.<br />
