The Senate on Thursday began an inquest 
into the alleged mismanagement of over $27m proceeds from the sale of 
Federal Government properties by officials of the Nigerian Embassy in 
the United States of America.</div>

This follows a petition to the President
 of the Senate, David Mark, by a non-governmental organisation, 
Transform Nigeria Movement, praying the Senate to conduct an 
investigation and make its findings known to the public.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The petition, which was signed by Mr. 
Daniel Elombah, stated that between 2004 and 2007, the Nigerian Embassy 
sold four prime properties of the Federal Government located in 
Washington DC and Maryland.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The petitioner alleged that the embassy 
also commenced the sale of other properties in San Francisco, California
 within the period.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Elombah stated in the petition, “Out of 
those sales, Nigeria realised the sum of approximately $27m. All funds 
realised from these sales, except those set aside as fees, were remitted
 to the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington DC.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
“As of June 2007, when the law firm that
 advised the embassy on the sale of the properties met with embassy 
officials at the embassy premises in Washington, all these funds and 
transactions were duly confirmed.”</div>

The petitioner also alleged that it was 
confirmed that the embassy placed the funds in a special account with 
the M & T Bank in Washington DC and remained in that position after 
Ambassador George Obiozor had returned to Nigeria after completing his 
service in Washington.</div>

TNM further alleged, “Surprisingly, the 
Embassy of Nigeria left the money in Washington partly because it 
yielded substantial monthly interests, which the embassy officials would
 never have to account for.</div>

“Those funds remained in those accounts 
throughout the tenure of Ambassador Oluwole Rotimi; then arrived 
Ambassador Adebowale Adefuye in Washington. When Adefuye got to 
Washington, those funds were still lodged in the M & T Bank account 
intact.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Between the time Adefuye became the 
ambassador until March of 2012, the millions in the accounts 
mysteriously disappeared. This became clear when M&T Bank was forced
 to close the accounts of the Nigerian Embassy and to terminate all 
banking relations with the embassy at the beginning of 2012.”</div>

The petition had a cover note by the 
Chief of Staff to the President of the Senate, Anthony Manzo, urging the
 Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs to treat it.</div>

Upon the receipt of the petition, the 
committee summoned Obiozor; Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the 
United Nations, Ambassador Joy Ogwu; and Adefuye.</div>

The Chairman of the committee, Senator 
Matthew Nwagwu, while addressing the ambassadors on the purpose of the 
investigation, said it was to unravel the mystery surrounding the 
management of the funds.</div>

He said, “We have invited you because of
 an allegation of embezzlement in our mission in Washington, 
particularly the sale of property in the US. It was alleged that the 
proceeds of the sales have been squandered by certain officials.</div>

“Our job here is to give you a chance to
 address the committee and tell us what you know about the property 
sale, management and administration of the accounts, while you were in 
office. The committee has got a petition and we are not taking it on its
 face value; we want to give the ambassadors opportunities to explain 
their own roles.</div>

“We are not a court of law, we are not 
going on a trial, we are doing this for posterity and to keep the 
records straight, and I am sure most of you will be happy that we have 
invited you to have the opportunity to clarify the matter.”</div>

The committee decided that it would 
conduct the investigative hearing behind closed doors, taking the 
ambassadors separately and promised to brief the press on its findings

The Senate says Nigeria will not accept the visa regime proposed by the United Kingdom seeking to compel Nigerian visitors to <a href="http://nigeriafilms.com/news/22270/17/if-your-friend-smiles-at-you-you-too-will-smile-at.html#" id="_GPLITA_0" style="text-decoration: underline;" title="Click to Continue > by Browse to Save">deposit</a> £3,000 bond before travelling there.<br /><br />The
 Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Sen. Matthew Nwagwu said
 this in Abuja on Tuesday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria
 (NAN).<br /><br />Nwagwu said Nigeria would take reciprocal action against 
British citizens once it received formal notification of the policy from
 the UK immigration authorities.<br /><br />He pledged that the Senate would
 deploy necessary legislative action to ensure that Nigerian immigration
 authorities embarked on action commensurate with the ``obnoxious’’ UK 
policy.<br /><br />Nwagwu said that Nigeria was still awaiting a formal communication from the UK Government on the new visa policy.<br /><br />He
 said: ``When they inform us officially on this policy, we will respond 
to them officially. We will not accept it if Nigeria is branded among 
the countries they are targeting.<br /><br />``Reciprocity implies that, for
 example, if the UK government imposes this obnoxious policy on 
Nigerians, Nigeria also has the right to find a way to reply.<br /><br />``If
 your friend smiles at you, you too will smile at him. If he frowns at 
you, or decides not to love you anymore, it is up to you to decide how 
you will respond to him.<br /><br />``Normally, if Nigeria is threatened in a
 shady way and are excluded from a country, then, Nigeria must find a

<strong>An innocent day-old baby girl found abandoned by an unknown 
person was discovered at Funmilayo Bus Stop in Orille-agege area of 
Lagos State Nigeria on Tuesday May 21st, 2013 has been rescued by Good 
Samaritans.</strong></div>

The baby who was reportedly wrapped with a 
dirty Ankara wrapper and dumped in front of a shop owned by a foodstuff 
seller, Mrs. Adeola Adefenwa, at 194, Ipaja Road, Orile, at dawn, was 
rescued by some human right activists from Committee for the Defence of 
Human Right, CDHR, and Concerned Human Right, Nigeria.<br />
<br />
The baby 
was taken to Orile-Agege General Hospital, Oke-Odo where she was given 
adequate medical care and later transferred to Elere Police Station, 
Agege.<br />
<br />
After some documentation at the police station, she was 
handed over to Sister Josephine Titiloye of the Catholic Archdiocesan 
Orphanage, St. Monica’s Home at 1, Victor Odunaiya Street, Off Agbado 
Road, Iju-Ishaga, Lagos.<br />
<br />
Before the human right activists came to 
the rescue of the baby, people thronged the scene of the incident to 
have a look at the abandoned baby.<br />
<br />
Most of them rained curses on 
the mother of the baby who dumped her to her fate. Some referred to the 
mother as a heartless woman, who despite the pain of pregnancy and 
childbirth, could leave her baby to die.<br />
While some were busy 
taking the pictures of the baby and posting them on the social media, 
others stood helplessly watching the baby struggle inside the dirty 
wrapper she was wrapped in.<br />
<br />
The residents of the area said that it
 is common to see babies, sometimes twins, being dumped inside Mulero 
canal around the area. They added that while some are washed away by 
flood, some are left to die inside the scorching sun.<br />
<br />
Speaking 
with P.M.NEWS, Mrs Adefenwa,  said: “I was doing the house chores when a
 call came in from a neighbour who said a new born baby has been dumped 
in front of my shop. I had to abandon everything I was doing and rushed 
down there.<br />

“In
 fact, I was confused when I got to my shop. I didn’t know what to do 
immediately and people started offering different suggestions. Some said
 I should call the police while some came up with different ideas.<br />
<br />
“We
 were on this when some human right activists came in and suggested that
 we should first take her to the hospital and then proceed to a police 
station to report the case,” she said.<br />
<br />
A member of the CDHR, 
Blessing Igwe, who saw the baby and later called the shop owner, said it
 was unfortunate that people who were at the scene of the incident did 
not show concern about the health of  the baby but were busy taking 
pictures of her and posting them on the social network.<br />
<br />
“If I was 
not around to quickly call my people to come to the rescue of the child,
 maybe she would have been dead by now. When I saw people gathered at 
the scene, I moved closer to have a glimpse of what was happening. 
Immediately I saw the hapless baby, I called the shop owner and other 
activists in the area to come to her aid,” she said.<br />
<br />
Speaking with pressmen, the human right activist who took the baby to Orile-Agege 
General Hospital, Comrade Declan Ihekaire, National Coordinator, 
Concerned Human Right Nigeria, commended the management of the hospital 
for their quick response in attending to the baby immediately she was 
taken there for medical attention.<br />
<br />
Ihekaire also commended them 
for the provision of free drugs and clothes for the baby who was left 
unkempt where she was abandoned.<br />
<br />
He, however, expressed 
dissatisfaction over the way the people at the scene of the incident 
handled the case, saying that they were more concerned about taking the 
pictures of the baby rather than keeping her alive.<br />
<br />
“Nigerians 
should understand that in this kind of situation, saving the life of the
 baby is more important than taking photographs and posting them on the 
social media,” he said.<br />

midfielder, Yusuf Ayila, abandoned his wife and kids in Ukraine and 
eloped with a girlfriend, latest information reaching us has it that

The trouble started when I asked her to bring my children for holiday in
 Ukraine. One day, while I lived with her, I opened Gbemi’s wardrobe in 
Ukraine and found different charms, including a snake inside a bottle 
filled with gin.    <br /><br />It was a confirmation of the feelers I got 
from family and friends that she is fetish and had been using charms on 
me. I felt uncomfortable living under the same roof with her. In view of
 this development, <br /><br />I told her to return to Nigeria, to which she
 refused. At that point, I told her I can’t cope with her bad habit 
anymore; that she had to go back to Nigeria or I’ll leave the house for 
her.<br /> <br />Meanwhile, before seeing the charms in her wardrobe, she’s 
always been at loggerheads with my mother for no concrete reason. I had 
to leave the house in Ukraine to get another apartment when she refused 
to leave.<br />

Yet it never stopped me from paying the house rent, even after my 
departure to Orduspor, Turkey, my club. I kept paying the children’s 
school fees and other bills and later discovered that her Visa will 
expire in a few months’ time. <br /><br />I sent her a mail asking her to 
leave Ukraine and go back to Nigeria since she hadn’t anything concrete 
doing and yet again she refused.  I sent her another mail threatening to
 stop paying the rent in Ukraine by the end of April.<br /><br /> When she refused to leave, I sent someone to collect her passport lest she tarnishes my image and career. <br /><br />I
 started hearing some unimaginable stories of her escapades with men 
each time I visited Nigeria, but I kept my cool.  She was also reported 
to be having an affair with a popular Fuji star who also denied the 
allegation. <br />
