The Nigerian-American singer and performing artiste had proven her self worth in the United States independent music scene before she made a goal 
to conquer the music industry in Nigeria (her home) and impact the Afropop community at large.<br />
<br />
It appears Janelia is one step closer to her goal with her new single, "Bakassi", as she properly introduces herself to this music industry with 
the audio and video release. Janelia sings; "I'm not just a pretty face, there's more to life than being a Sexy Nana, I get content".

Last evening news filtered out of the death of radical lawyer and renown activist, Bamidele Aturu.<br />
Mr. Aturu is said to have died this evening after a brief illness. He was 49 years old.<br />
The late lawyer was one of the founding members  Democratic Alternative,
 a political group committed to pursuing deep-rooted democratic 
principles and holding those in power accountable to the governed.<br />
He came to prominence as a fighter against power abuses when, as a 
member of the National Youth Service Corps, he refused to shake the hand
 of a military administrator  of Niger State, Col. Lawan Gwadabe in 1988
 during his NYSC passing out parade declaring that the military had 
caused great harm to the democratic aspirations of Nigerians.<br />

Mr. Aturu studied law at the University of Ife, and devoted much of his 
legal practice to representing marginalized or oppressed individuals and
 groups.<br />

The judges of the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa have named
 Akin Bello, a former Chairman of the Oyo State chapter of the 
Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), as the winner of the fifth 
edition of the prestigious prize in Literature.<br />

Bello was crowned by Professor Wole Soyinka, assisted by the board of 
the Lumina Foundation, the organisers of the prize, Governor of River 
State, Rotimi Amaechi & Globacom’s Head of GloWorld, Titi Ebinisi, 
at the grand finale of the award at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, 
Lagos on Saturday.<br />

Globacom, was keenly contested by three authors, Bello, Othuke Ominibohs

One of the judges of the Prize, Professor Olu Obafemi, a prolific 
playwright, novelist and poet, who has himself published 14 scholarly 
and 15 creative books, formally announced the winner, who was promptly 
presented the much coveted trophy and his cheque.<br />

The winner, Akin Bello, was born in Lagos in 1950, and educated at Oyo, 
Ghana and the University of Ife, (now Obafemi Awolowo University) 
Ile-Ife, where he obtained a B.Sc. (Hons) (Pol. Science) in the 2nd 
Class (Upper) Division in 1975.<br />

A widely traveled man with a richly diversified work experience, Bello 
is currently an Executive Director of a Non-Governmental Organisation in
 Ibadan. He was the Chairman of the Oyo State Chapter of ANA for four 
years between 2008 and 2012.<br />

Before now, Bello had published three novels and a poetry collection. 
His first play, ‘Egbon of Lagos’ has now won him recognition and fame at
 the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa.<br />

In his remarks, Professor Soyinka thanked the Lumina Foundation and its 
partners, including Globacom for organizing the grand event and making

In her remarks, Mrs. Francesca Emmanuel, the Chairperson of the Board of
 Trustees of Lumina Foundation, equally thanked all the partners of the 
organization, without whose support the project might not have been a 
huge success that it has been.<br />

The grand finale of the prize was graced by other literary icons, 
including renowned playwright and poet, John Pepper Clark, a former 
President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), and loyal 
protégé of Professor Soyinka, Odia Ofeimun, renowned Professor of 
International Law and Jurisprudence, Akin Oyebode, who delivered the 
keynote address, and many other distinguished scholars.<br />

Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa is a biennial event staged 
to recognize the best literary work produced by an African. It was 
established by the Lumina Foundation in 2005 to promote literary 
excellence in Africa and has since become the African equivalent of the 
Nobel Prize. This year's Prize was dedicated to the drama genre.<br />
<br />
The panel of five judges for the Prize is drawn from Uganda, South Africa, Mali, Nigeria and Algeria.<br />
<br />
Guests were entertained by the Steve Rhodes Orchestra which reeled out 
tunes in different genres, cutting across old and contemporary. Also, 
multi-talented instrumentalist and Glo ambassador, Bez added spice to 
the event.<br />

It's just shy of a hundred days since 276 girls in northern
<span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD2">Nigeria</span> were abducted by Boko Haram, the Islamic extremist group. And Nigeria
has seen more bombings and abductions since the girls vanished.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Just yesterday, Nigerian <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD6">officials</span> announced that another
group of girls and women, who were abducted a few weeks ago, actually managed
to escape. But journalist and lawyer Chude Jideonwo says it's difficult to
distinguish fact from fiction in Nigeria's many kidnapping cases.</div>

"Three weeks ago, when these girls were kidnapped in a
village called Damboa, the Nigerian security forces denied the reports that
more women had been kidnapped," Jideonwo says. "So it was really
strange to see the same forces now say that the women, that hadn't been
kidnapped, had been released. It symbolizes the confusion behind the rescue
efforts."</div>

Jideonwo says the fate of the 276 girls kidnapped in
mid-April, the ones who gained worldwide attention, is equally unclear. In May,
Nigeria's chief of defence staff, Air Chief <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD7">Marshal</span> Alex Badeh, said the armed
forces knew the exact location of the missing girls. But last week, another
military spokesperson admitted Nigerian officials did not know where the girls
were. </div>

"It's just a pretty distressing state of affairs,"
Jideonwo says. "It's almost like they're kidnapping the girls again."</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
"It's one thing to have these girls missing and for us
to be confident that every <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD5">single</span> best effort is being applied to solve this
problem," he says. "And it's another to have the girls missing and be
more convinced <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD1">every day</span> that those with the duties of finding the girls are as
confused as ever." </div>

Daily demonstrations in support of the missing girls are
still held in the Nigerian capital Abuja, under what Jideonwo calls "the
most relentless, shameful attacks by the Nigerian government." </div>

Nigerian banned demonstrations in support of the girls in
early June, but protestors took their case to court and received an injunction
against the government that kept the sit-ins going. In response, Jideonwo says,
Nigerian authorities withdrew security protection for the protestors and
shipped in counter-protestors who attacked those advocating on behalf of the
missing girls.  </div>

But the Nigerian lawyer and journalist also blames his
country's citizens for not maintaining sufficient resolve in the face of the
abductions and explosions that now rock the country's major cities. </div>

Jideonwo says he was appalled at the response to the bombing
in June in Abuja, which happened just before the World Cup. "We tweeted
for a few minutes and there was outrage, it trended and then we're back to
watching football and tweeting about football," he says. "We can't
afford as citizens to let this become a way of life." </div>

He also wonders what lies ahead for his country. Jideonwo
recalls a conversation he had with an Israeli stranger in an elevator, who said
to him, "You see what's happening in Iraq? It looks like Boko Haram wants
to do the same in Nigeria ... the Islamists want to run down your country and
take over the government." </div>

Jideonwo says his immediate reaction was disbelief. "It
can never happen, you know, because it is just a fringe group in the
northeast," he told the Israeli man.</div>

The Israeli answered, "Well, that's how it started in
other parts of the world. And if your government isn't winning the war, isn't
stopping the bombs from spreading to other states, then give me one good reason
why what is happening with ISIS in Iraq will not happen with Boko Haram in
Nigeria." </div>

Jideonwo says his ultimate response was stark.
"Honestly, I take no pleasure in saying this — I honestly couldn't and
still can't think of a legitimate, logical response to such a question,"
he says. "Because no matter what the government tries to say in Nigeria,
we are not winning this war against terror."</div>

Still, Jideonwo stays he hasn't given up hope that the girls
might be rescued. </div>

"For me, they are a symbol of a steady march toward
anarchy. I take no pleasure in using bombastic words, but that is the reality
of our situation," he says.</div>

"It's a steady march. They represent for us our failure
as citizens because many of us allowed the government to get away with these
things. We let them divide us on the basis of religion and ethnicity."</div>

If those girls are rescued and brought back home, he says,
"then the bit of faith we have in <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD9">our country</span> and its future can begin to
be restored."<br />

There was mild drama on Tuesday at the National Judicial
Institute, NJI, Abuja, venue of the on-going National Conference, when a
delegate, Sidi Ali, said the biggest private hospital being built in Abuja is
owned by a former Governor of Rivers State.</div>

Delegates continued their deliberations on the report of the
Committee on Devolution of Power and what took the attention of most delegates
in their contribution was the issue of increasing the derivation allocation
from the present 13 per cent.</div>

In his contribution earlier in the day, a delegate
representing the Civil Society, Nasiru Kura, stated that he was not against an
increase in the derivation principle, b ut that whatever additional money the
oil producing states get would eventually go into serving the leaders of the
area to the detriment of the people in the </div>

communities ravaged by oil
exploration.</div>

He said what most governors do is to purchase private jets
and gallivant around.</div>

To buttress Mr. Kura’s position, Mr. Ali during his
presentation said, “As I am talking now, the biggest hospital owned by a
private person in Abuja is being built by a former governor of Rivers State”.</div>

He also recalled how jailed former Governor of Delta State,
James Ibori, offered former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, EFCC, Nuhu Ribadu, a bribe of $15 million to stave off
investigation into his affairs.</div>

As soon as Mr. Ali made his allegation, a former Governor of
Rivers State, Peter Odili, who is also a delegate at the Conference, kept
shouting ‘Point of Order’.</div>

When the Chairman of the Conference eventually allowed Mr.
Odili to speak, he denied owning a hospital in Abuja.</div>

“There are many former governors of Rivers State here, but I
happen to be the only medical doctor among them,” he said. “Let me say before
this Honourable House and before almighty God that Dr. Peter Odili have nothing
to do with this so called big hospital in Abuja which has been paraded and
touted by Hon. Sidi Ali.</div>

“If he is sure of his facts, let him stand up and tell this
Hon. House the name of the owner and prove that I am the owner of this
Hospital. I challenge him to do so, and I challenge every Nigerian who believes
that allegation, otherwise I am going to take legal action against him.”</div>

Mr. Kutigi, however, intervened to say that there was no
need for Mr. Odili to be defensive since Mr. Ali did not mention the name of
the former governor he was talking about.</div>

The hospital being referred to by Mr. Ali is called Reliance
Hospital which is still yet to be commissioned and is said to be one of the
best private Hospitals in Abuja.</div>

It is located at Area 11, behind the Nipost Headquarters, in
Garki District of Abuja.</div>

Mr. Odili, who governed Rivers State for eight years,

the EFCC from prosecuting him for corruption.</div>
